The article says the CENTER of the TV should be approximately 42 inches above the floor. That works well in most cases for both comfortable viewing and aesthetics. However, so much depends on the size of the room. Interior decorators who want to mount TVs over fireplaces in smaller rooms are going after aesthetics only. Unless the room is large, a TV mounted over a fireplace is just too high for comfortable viewing (causing the head to tilt back the same way that looking at device screens causes your head to tilt forward). In the end, comfortable viewing should be the main goal. We have a living room that is 15 feet deep and 20 feet wide. The fireplace is on the deep end. The mantel is 60 inches from the floor. While over the fireplace was the most logical place to put a TV (the sofa sits across from the fireplace with chairs on both sides), it would make one have to slightly tilt the head. Maybe it wouldn’t be bothersome for a 20 year old, but at that time, we were in our 40s. Watching a 2 hour movie or a 3 hour baseball game with even a small tilt of the head results in a crick in the neck that can be down right painful when you get older. We ended up reconfiguring the built in bookcases on each side of the fireplace in order to put the TV lower. While it makes the room a little unbalanced, the functionality was more important in this case.

Thumbs up to that, Lori. As a 50+ and having had neck issues, still visit the chiropractor monthly for maintenance, looking *up* can be perilous, for any aged person. Our last home was set up quite similar as yours, 18' from wall to fireplace, fireplace mantle slightly higher than yours, and we installed wall plug for above fireplace, as well as exactly where you placed yours. We opted for your way. We found that, when watching tv the guest chair was rarely occupied, and if so, it was one of us occupied with reading or some such non tv chore. So, all worked well using your format.
