“The client, a single woman, lived in San Francisco for almost 10 years before moving back to India. As an ode to her experiences there, she was keen on channelling California casual vibes into her apartment, and it was my task to bring that vision to life. Hence, we chose an aesthetic seeded in clean lines and subtle neutrals, to give the home a calm and composed air. We managed to pack plenty of functional elements into the compact space, while still making it aesthetically pleasing,” says Sunita Yogesh, founder and principal designer of Sunita Yogesh Studio.

The main door opens into a wide entry characterised by monochrome accents.
“We wanted to make the entry impactful, yet minimal. We went for a kilim-patterned upholstered bench with hairpin legs, and black-and-white abstract artwork. The entry sets the mood of the home by inspiring an airy, relaxed and unfussy vibe,” notes Yogesh.

The entry leads directly into the dining room, dominated by pared-back accents, light wood grains and a muted palette.
“We defined the dining zone with a grid gallery wall featuring prints of San Francisco on one side, and a wooden console table, showcasing a chic coastal-themed vignette, on the other. The dining chairs, embellished with woven details, add texture to the muted shell,” Yogesh says.

Adjacent to the dining room lies the living room, which introduces bursts of indigo into the peripheral vanilla palette. An area rug anchors the furniture into a cohesive composition, giving the living zone sharp definition while demarcating it from the dining area. The space features soft layers of light by way of the floor lamp, table lamp and brass sputnik light fixtures.
“We opted for neutral colours for the sofa, pouffes and coffee table, and resorted to infusing vibrancy and texture through artwork, textiles and other decor elements. Also, we juxtaposed an assortment of wood tones to add visual variety to the aesthetic,” says Yogesh.

The original kitchen was outfitted with builder-grade materials, and featured a brown backsplash and plain countertop.
“The client’s dream was to have an all-white kitchen. In line with that vision, we tore down the shell and started from scratch. We opted for a herringbone backsplash, quartz countertop and Shaker-style cabinets in an all-white palette. In addition, we incorporated open wooden shelves to give the space a swish spin. The kitchen also hosts a bijou utility zone at the far end, for laundry and storage,” says Yogesh.

The master bedroom hosts an upholstered king-size bed with a tufted headboard in charcoal grey. Wooden nightstands flank either side, highlighting the slumber zone.
“We chose board-and-batten panelling for the wall to conjure a sense of form and texture, and crafted a minimalist vignette on the chest of drawers for a sophisticated appeal,” says Yogesh.

The master bathroom takes a cue from the living room, incorporating a palette of indigo and white. The white walls and ceiling urge the eyes to the striking indigo-tiled floor. The space straddles an aesthetic between modern minimalism and eclectic indulgence.
The guest bedroom continues the blue-and-white palette of the previous spaces. A compact queen-size bed in a natural wood tone tames the starkness of the crisp white walls, while black nightstands create a contrasting interplay with the surrounding neutral elements.
“We wanted to keep the space visually light, so we chose pieces that would be easy on the eyes. The transparent globular table lamps, pastel paintings and soft fabrics are some examples,” explains Yogesh.

With simple grey floor tiles and vitrified marble walls, the common bathroom sports a classic look.
“We combined white and wood tones to balance the colour temperature. Here, the wood-finish vanity cabinet really pops against the white backdrop,” notes Yogesh.

Having spent the weekend sharing a small double bed with my husband, I have to say, they are an invention of the devil!
Two negative comments about this otherwise lovely flat - one is the overlarge gap where the washing machine is placed, secondly I think the kitchen units that are taken up to the ceiling make the space look narrow. Ideally I would have left out the wall hung units altogether.
Where are the cupboards for storage? I don’t see any other than a tiny dresser
