Houzz Tour: Bold White Infuses This Mumbai Apartment With Pizzazz
Soft hues, dainty prints and custom furniture make Rohina Anand Khira's home a restful yet vibrant and stylish cocoon
The home opens up to a large living-cum-dining room, where the bleached walls complement the white and printed furniture. A mushroom-hued stretch of wall adds a slight dose of colour layering. “Before moving in, I’d just visited Greece and loved the white and blue scenery there. I wanted to replicate the same in my home. Of course, now the home has undergone a lot of changes – after having my two children, I decided to change the sofa upholstery to blue (which was earlier white) and added some prints. We had a den earlier, which we converted into a kids’ room,” says Khira.
All the furniture in the room (except the cane chairs that are from Ikea) is in mango wood, and was purchased from a store in Shanghai. “All the pieces were Duco-painted white and have a protective lacquer layer,” says Khira.

The large TV unit holds the tube and plenty of other little accessories reminiscent of the couple’s travels all over the world. “I was lucky to find this unit in Shanghai that fits exactly into this space. I especially like how the handles and knobs contrast against the white structure,” Khira says.

The dining room is a serene ivory-hued space that receives plenty of sunlight. The colour white keeps this space looking large and airy. To punctuate the neutral scheme, the room shows just a hint of colour via the flowers and the pink-toned coffee machine. “The dining table, chairs and coffee-machine table too are from Shanghai. I bought the curtains from the store First Impression. The drapes help filter sunlight and block views into our home,” says Khira.

The sideboard is a display unit for a few choice accessories and a storage space for chinaware. The louvred doors add a stylish edge to the unit.
The master bedroom overlooks the vast Arabian sea – throughout the day, the space stays well-lit and bright. The bed was sourced from Shanghai and the painting above is an original print bought online. “We painted the sliding cupboard white so it blends into the walls and doesn’t look too bulky. Plus, the white-and-blue theme of the home continues into this space, too,” Khira says.

The bedroom furnishings and flowers are from AA Living. The side tables are also from Shanghai.

While the dressing table and the side table are from Shanghai, “the cupboard was specially designed to add extra storage, and to match the decor of the room. I specially sourced the knobs locally for them to look like the ones on my dresser,” says Khira.
“The flowers stuck on the dresser are handmade paper flowers by an artist in Mumbai, called Urmi. She sends a big box of these – you can take double-sided industrial tape to stick them on any surface. And these flowers last for a long time,” she says.

Once a den, this room was converted into a children’s bedroom. The space is vibrant and playful, thanks to the numerous toys and the doll house, although the overriding palette is still white, with hints of yellow. “We design children’s furniture at AA Living, so the bed and changing table are from our store. So are the bedsheets. I got the mirror specially made – I visited a local store and gave them a drawing of a cloud on a piece of ply to replicate. The dragonflies are from a store in London,” says Khira.
The changing table also doubles as a storage unit. The cupboard next to it and the glass-fronted shelf unit above it help increase storage without making the room seem overcrowded.

“This wall cupboard was originally a window – we decided to convert it into a storage space. I sourced the knobs locally, in keeping with the white-and-yellow theme of the room,” Khira says.

All things white and bright, with little doses of blue … this sea-facing Mumbai home is a serene, calming haven. “While searching for a home, we came across this one in 2012. It had eggshell-white walls and two rooms plus a storage. But what really made us fall in love with it was the uninterrupted view of the sea, visible from the master bedroom,” says Rohina Anand Khira of AA Living.
