Gurgaon Houzz: An Eclectic Home With Modern & Classic Designs
Studio Bipolar imbues an edgy, urban vibe in this home by merging the quirky with timeless decor
The homeowners of this Sohna Road residence asked Sanjana Mathur and Ujjwal Sagar, co-founders and principal architects at Studio Bipolar, to create a home where they could entertain friends, and unwind and relax as a family. “The homeowners were open to a variety of interior styles, so we settled on an eclectic design scheme, which combined the best of everything. The apartment harmoniously balances rustic elements like brick, combined with mid-century-inspired teak-wood accent chairs and sleek leather sofas, along with minimal black metallic tables,” says Mathur.
The foyer leads to the living area, which is divided into three seating zones. A teal accent wall abuts the screen, punctuating the space with vibrancy. It also offsets the neutral shades of the brown faux leather sofa and beige chairs. The patterned black-and-white rug anchors the table.

In the second lounge, a blue suede-upholstered sofa stands against a brick wall. The mid-century teak lounge chairs with monochrome print upholstery create an interesting interplay of patterns.
A neutral rug and a black metal shelving unit and matching coffee table give a cohesive look to the decor. The coffee table is from IKEA and floor lamp from Milky Way Lighting.

“The hall leading to the child’s room is designed to incorporate storage in the sleekest manner possible. Floating built-in shelves with lighting keep the corridor from looking dark and the round mirror visually expands the narrow hall. The floor storage houses a mini fridge. Wooden rafters overhead break the monotony of the plain ceiling while the tinted glass pendant lights keep the journey through the hall interesting,” says Mathur.
A rustic brick wall gives continuity to the design narrative in the third seating lounge. The wall serves as a canvas to display family pictures and a beige L-shaped sectional sofa with a chaise longue. Wooden rafters on the ceiling draw the eyes upwards, creating a warm and inviting ambience.
A tall canvas painting gives the illusion of height to this space. Wall sconces flanking the artwork bring in subtle drama. Black wooden coffee tables balance the soft neutral colours of the rug.
The living room leads to the study, where the sofa’s subtle pink tones provide the room with freshness and character. Behind the sofa, a crisp white wall with floating shelves display curios. The dark-blue carpet with a geometric pattern adds depth to the decor.

Filled with natural light, the child’s bedroom is light and bright. “Lots of activity areas have been placed inside the room. A marker board in the shape of a house rests against the wall with a play table and chairs in front of it. The walls are painted in dual tones of white and pastel blue,” says Sagar.
The neutral palette of the bedroom gets colourful relief with a tropical wallpaper. The woody notes of the storage unit lend warmth to the decor.
