I purchased my house a few years ago, and since then I have been gradually working on transitioning the existing plantings to something more sustainable and native. The one "weed" I'm constantly warring with, though, is the progeny of the large oak that shades most of my garden area... is there any way to discourage the little oak seedlings from propagating so enthusiastically? Pulling them leaves huge holes, since the acorns are large, and cutting them back doesn't seem to deter them... new sprouts pop right up! As much as I hate to war with trees in the first place, my gardens are very short on sun as it is, so increasing the canopy cover would kill off most of the pollinator food. Can anyone lend insight as to potential solutions?

We have been designing in this style for 12 years. The most recent adaptation is to incorporate rocks, driftwood and found objects into the native landscape as a sort of sculpture garden.
