Design 2011: Layers of Global Style
Create Your Own Look With a Blend of World Design
I'm not a betting gal, but if I were, I'd put all my money on the global look going, um, global in 2011. We first mentioned this style back at the beginning of 2010, but this coming year it'll be back — with a twist. In 2011 expect more of a mix of cultures playing off each other in one room, with layers of ethnic pieces melding for an eclectic, purely original look. Here are some fine examples of the trend:
A prim side chair gets a jolt when reupholstered in African-style fabric. Paired with a Moroccan side table, it makes a statement.
Start with one oriental rug, add a collection of Japanese prints, then top with a European demijohn bottle: a recipe for subtle global success.
The rug in this room looks like it could be from Latin America. The rest? A hodgepodge of antique store chic.
Ikat is kind of the go-to global fabric. It's used in soft gray on the couch, and is that a pillow made from a Moroccan wedding blanket? Could be. The oriental rug brings some warmth to the room.
This photo keeps popping up recently, and with good reason: The mix of styles (Hollywood Regency for the headboard, Mid-Century Modern for the bench) and global references (Foo dogs, ikat pillows) feels current.
Chinoiserie panels in sunshine yellow brighten up this Hollywood Regency living room.
Another view of the room, with Chinese-style ginger jars lining the mantle.
A few Chinese symbols are woven in with this collection of vintage artwork.
Sometimes all you need is a few throw pillows to wink at the look. These kilim-like ones are an unexpected addition to an otherwise rustic interior.
