“The brief from the homeowners was to capture the spirit of the surrounding mountains. They were already well acquainted with our design philosophy as we have designed and executed virtually all their properties in Lutyens Delhi. Hence the trust level in our capabilities to provide luxurious, understated sensibility, keeping in mind the location and view from the apartment of the Himalayas,” says Rano Singh, founder of The Muse.

The nucleus of the home is a large foyer with a double-height lobby that flows seamlessly into the living and dining areas. While an expansive mirror serves as the backdrop, the marble fireplace exudes warmth and is a must-have during the extreme Dehradun winters. A gold-plated chandelier, a circular table and an carpet patterned in ochre on charcoal black take centerstage here. Beige marble adorns the twisting staircase and leads the eye upwards.

Floor-to-ceiling windows swathe the living room with natural light, creating an inviting ambience. Punctuated in hues of beige and blue, the printed upholstered armchairs and the rug offset the neutral colour palette of the Chesterfield sofas and furnishings. Matte gold accents from the chandelier and lamps imbue a sense of grandeur and opulence. Behind the sofa, an artwork by Studio Art lends a whimsical touch to the decor.

“For the grand dining and living room, a special marble from the cream family was sourced, which stands out for its unusual shade,” says Singh. “Throughout the residence, we have tactfully utilised large bay windows and huge mirrors to blend the indoors with outdoors beautifully. The colour palette used throughout the house complements the snowy mountaintops – the formal areas are awash in taupe, beige and dove grey.” Suspended from the ceiling, a dull-gold chandelier from Highlight brings in flair without being blingy.
The ground floor also has a TV-cum-conference room with a fireplace. While the neutral colour palette of the leather sofa and chairs give continuity to the design narrative, the vibrant red armchair stands out as the centrepiece and energises the room.
The staircase leads to the first floor and a cosy lounge with a fireplace where the entire family loves to spend time together, especially during the winters. “This is the most statement-making part of the house. Since it’s a family home, the first floor takes on a brighter and bolder look with splashes of blue, green and aqua. The walls are painted in warm shades of olive, beige and dove grey – blending into each other, rather than standing out,” says Singh.
A TV-cum-family room offers additional space for quality time on this level. A tufted sectional sofa and arm chairs create a restful zone. The blue TV unit displays artefacts and steals the spotlight in this area. An informal dining space behind the sofa is ideal for intimate family dining.
The guest bedroom is in muted hues and features an interesting interplay of patterns. Soothing pastels offset the neutral colour scheme’s monotony through the sofa at the foot of the bed, the floral rug, and the armchair and love seat by the windows. The vertically tufted velvety headboard brings in textural contrast.
Dark-grey marble adorns the floors and walls in the primary bathroom. A glass partition separates the wet zone.
Reminiscent of the surrounding mountains, doses of green in the furnishing inject freshness in the master bedroom. Soft shades of distressed wood in the flooring and furniture instil warmth in the decor. A patterned sofa at the foot of the bed and an ottoman add a snug touch to the ambience.
The designer makes the most of the expansive window by placing a seating arrangement with a coffee table next to it.
Rich, luscious shades of brown and mirrors with ornate frames add character to the master bathroom.
