A pop of yellow can enliven a space and brings oodles of personal style to the subtle and neutral grey. The look-at-me yellow can provide warmth and character to muted grey colour schemes with a simple splash of paint on the walls or a canvas, in the upholstery or in accessories dotted about the room. Here are some beautiful spaces that show how these two colours offset each other in the most delicious of ways.
Bankston May Associates
The mustard-yellow upholstered chairs simply sing in this contemporary living room with with pale-grey walls, blinds and sofas. The sunny velvet upholstery instantly livens up the mood. The abstract painting on the wall and the glow from the chandelier gently add a bit of yellow to the upper part of the room, and balance the pairing below.

From bedding to bedside accessories, the marriage of grey and yellow works seamlessly with the dark wooden furniture in this bedroom. The dull-gold art on the wall adds to the ambience.

This living room uses pale yellow as the primary colour in the damask upholstered chairs, the curtains and, with a light touch, on the wall. Though the couch is a solid ash grey, the colour merges harmoniously with soft yellow in the floral patterned wallpaper to give a sense of balance.
Libby Langdon Interiors, Inc.
Here, the mellow undertones of yellow on the sofa, cushions and even the walls are cheerful without being too in-your-face. Though most of the bedroom is done up in restful grey to aid sleep, the pale butterscotch tint introduces an appealing element with just the right burst of colour.
Carousel Designs
Soft powder-puff grey and buttercup yellow are an excellent gender-neutral choice for a modern nursery such as this one. The Aztec-pattern grey-and-white upholstery and bedding combine with zingy yellow lamps, mattress, wall hangings – and, of course, plenty of natural light – to make a cheery room.
Red Egg Design Group
The classic combination of charcoal and ash greys with whites and yellows, like in this backsplash, can turn any bathroom into a sunshiny space.
Ivy Lane Living
This symphony in striped yellow and grey in the upholstery is further accentuated with the cushions and study chair. The roses and funky vase add freshness and pep up the formal home office’s ambience.
Resort Style Vacation Homes
Pops of happy yellow-gold leap out in the bedroom with patterned cushions, quilts and bedside table lamps. The subdued grey walls serve as the perfect backdrop to bring out the sunny hues.

10 Spaces That Light Up With a Slice of Yellow
essential design + build
While the rest of the space is done up in varying shades of grey that bring depth, the stunning effect produced by the yellow pendants becomes the focal point in this kitchen. However, don’t dismiss the delicate balance given by the yellow hanging pot rack and flowers.

The only yellow in the room is provided by the painting, which shows how, even when used sparingly, yellow can be the show-stealer. The muted palette of the painting counters the primarily dark hues of the furniture and injects life and energy into this space.

These yellow curtains bring a sense of tranquility amid the interesting drama of floral motifs on the wall paper. The curtains accentuate the window, with a jute blind serving as a backdrop to create sophisticated interiors. The solid block of dark grey (of the bedspread) anchors the lively mix.
