It is a surprise that mountain laurel is not on this list. Because they have evergreen foliage, Kalmia are beautiful in flower or out and are especially interesting as they age into old, gnarled plants. Kalmia grow well on the US east coast (zones 5-8) where they are native. They thrive in partial shade.

Re natives vs exotics: very wide Houzz readership outside of US too.
Re daphne being difficult to grow: did not see a mention of daphnes (like rhododendrons) hating lime soil. So planting where their roots will get close (now or in future) to a concrete path can cause their demise. Here in New Zealand mine is budding up beautifully to cheer up a gloomy winter.

One often sees landscapes designed with acid loving plants used as foundation plantings. Daphnes, rhododendrons, kalmia, pieris, and blueberries all suffer when their roots come in contact with lime based concrete in building foundations. Shallow rooted azaleas can be made to grow next to a building provided they are planted high in a mulch bed and are given generous soil supplements to increase acidity. Other plants like daphnes and blueberries are not so forgiving.
