Carefully edited materials and a strategic layout give this master bathroom the look and vibe of a resort retreat

The owners of this home wanted a stylish ensuite master bathroom. “They wanted it to feel almost like a hotel guest suite,” designer Veronica Martin says of the clients, who found her by searching through projects on Houzz.

The existing ensuite bathroom was located at an odd angle off the bedroom. To the left of the mirrored wall behind the bed is the walkway leading to the bathroom.

The style of the bathroom was also not to the couple’s taste.

This is the layout of the master suite after the renovation. To help the rooms better flow together, Martin shifted the bathroom entry, moved the closets and relocated the bed.

The renovated bathroom contains a deliberately limited range of materials. “We believe that creating the biggest impact is about editing,” Martin says. “We think that when you scale back and pick your moments to shine, that’s when you have the largest effect. The vanity being centred on the entry to the washroom – this is our big moment. We wanted everything else to be very quiet so your eyes are immediately drawn to the centre point.”

The designer thought of the room as a white box – “We wanted the shell to be very soft and to fade out” – to allow the repeated black framework to stand out. “We wanted to create a layered vignette of black framework: The door handles, black-framed mirrors and framed light fixtures,” Martin says.

The floating vanity features inset flat-panel cabinet doors and is made of white oak, which matches the white oak flooring throughout the rest of the home. The vanity countertop is Pure White Quartz Caesarstone.

Brushed-bronze fixtures bring warmth to the space, along with the wood cabinetry and amber-toned tops of the pendant frames.

“To keep with our five-star hotel theme we wanted a separate shower and tub,” Martin says. The tub is to the right of the vanity, the shower to the left.

Martin added a ledge behind the tub that houses the tub filler and also serves as a space to place accent pieces or toiletries. The wall treatment and ledge are both easy-to-clean porcelain tile made to look like marble. Choosing large-format tile (30 by 60 inches) for the walls and floor minimises grout lines.

The shower walls and bathroom floor feature the same porcelain tile as behind the tub. The shower also has a ledge for stowing bath products.
