Beautiful Inside-Outside Bathrooms We Love
Skylights, glass walls, greenery and stone finishes are some of the key ingredients of these nine gorgeous bathrooms
The modern bathroom has quickly assumed the rank of a soothing retreat; a refuge within the home to escape life’s daily stress. And in our quest to rejuvenate after a hard day at work, we’ve quite literally brought down its conventional walls, blurring the line between the interiors and the outdoors.
One way to create the ultimate relaxation pad is to be close to nature. And these spaces do just that – they maximise on views of the great outdoors. From luxe marble to warm wooden finishes and tubs you can soak in while you enjoy the tranquil views – here is a list of our favourite bathrooms that are so inviting that you would never want to leave.

2. A spa bathroom
So you have the space for a luxury spa-styled bathroom even though you live in a city apartment! Interior designer Petilau makes the most of it by bringing nature into the area with an assortment of tropical plants, creating an instant calming effect. If you can’t fit in a tall palm, then why not try some tiny succulents on the counter or windowsill?
Tip: Plants are a great way of adding colour and life into an otherwise staid space. Given the high humidity and close proximity to water, the bathroom can become a very suitable place to grow some greenery.

3. Tropical bathroom
The true mark of a well-planned indoor-outdoor bathroom is its ability to secure complete privacy while making the most of the views. Monica Khanna of Monica Khanna Designs achieves this in a beautiful, open air concept bathroom in New Delhi. Although multiple rooms overlook the same garden, the house is designed in such a way that no person from one space has access into the other room’s outdoor space. Privacy is further ensured by the installation of motorised blinds.

4. O-natural bathroom
Better than a window is an open skylight – when you bundle that with natural materials and rough finishes, the “outdoors” effect created is unparalleled. In his own holiday home in Vadodara, architect Dipen Gada makes the best of a windowless bathroom by doing just this. Drenched in natural light, the open skylight over the shower creates the illusion of bathing outside, while the surrounding textures of the floor, the accent wall, and the rough-finish of the dry areas further complement the rustic outdoor vibe. However, what really ties the whole natural theme together is that cement sink.
Tip: Although high humidity is great for plants, it isn’t the best for art. But if you have proper ventilation, loads of windows or an open skylight, then why not hang a picture or two to glam things up?

6. Glass-encased shower
Only a glass wall separates the shower from the rest of the bathroom in this Hyderabad home designed by Aamir and Hameeda Associates. This allows plenty of natural light from the skylight to reach every nook of the room. It also demarcates the two areas without cutting down on the volume of the space.

7. Warm and fuzzy bathroom
The best of bathrooms come with their unique touches – maybe with TVs and surround-sound systems, innovative shower heads or glamorous bathtubs. But they also feature elegant materials.
Tejas Patel of Studiovistara mixes a range of natural materials to create drama and give this bath some depth. Think about combining a wooden finish with dark stone tiles and plenty of plants in a private courtyard to create a warm and a cosy spot.

8. Minimalist bathroom
By working with specialised labour from Auroville, Dipen Gada revived a dying practice by completely cladding this minimalist bathroom in IPS (Indian pattern stone). With the use of a skylight and a strategically placed picture window overlooking the outdoors, showering in this bathroom lets you feel like you’re out in the open. But it also gives you the privacy you need to take care of business. Committing to the outdoor theme, Gada brings in fluttering butterflies on one of the walls.

9. Clean-lined bathroom
Aamir and Hameeda Associates makes the list again with this contemporary, clean-lined bathroom. Situated in a single level house that can only be described as a minimalist, quirky rectangular box, this bathroom cleverly conceals a tub too. Aamir says the bathtub was intentionally designed to be even with the floor, so that one could be surrounded by an assortment of plants while they enjoyed a soak. The skylight framing the entire area adds a little bit of oomph to the space, while other bathroom essentials like the sink and toilet are tucked away in the corner.
