“The clients are a Mangalorean couple with a young daughter. Their sense of aesthetic leans towards a love for all things colonial, rich and character-led. They were keen on the home exuding a classic, old-world charm while still appearing fresh and new. In translating the brief, we decided to craft a Spanish-inspired design scheme and paid special attention to architectural impressions, incorporating big white arches, a spectrum of blues and golden yellows, and a young, earthy cottage vibe,“ shares Vinithra Amarnathan, founder and interior designer of Weespaces.

The main door opens into a generous, square-shaped entryway, defined by a striking deep-green console table on the right. A subtle art gallery display, composed of four vintage-style botanical paintings, adds a colourful flourish to the bare wall above, while a jute pendant lamp offers an organic touch to the space.

“The foyer leads into the home through a lovely archway, which mirrors the archway outside the kitchen diagonally opposite. Straight ahead lies the living area, while the daughter’s bedroom is situated to the left, and the dining area, kitchen, and master and guest bedrooms to the right,” notes Amarnathan.

A bijou sitting area, characterised by a beau-blue bench, precedes the main living room, channelling serene, cottage-style vibes.

“Colour is everywhere in this home, appearing in good doses while still looking contained. In a way, each space has its own little colour story, “ says Amarnathan.

“The home is a marriage of old-world charm and modern-day sensibilities. In the living room, some furniture pieces, such as the traditional cane round-back chairs, were picked up by the clients from antiques stores. We blended the traditional elements with a more modern Spanish-inspired aesthetic by using black metal in the custom-made bookshelf and nesting tables. We also added vibrant kilims, and materials like earthy jute and warm rustic wood,” says Amarnathan.

The dove-grey custom-made sofa is a transitional low-arm, high-back style that complements the riot of colours in the vicinity.

“We added large custom prints to echo the Spanish theme, and scattered some fun accents through the space,” Amarnathan says.

The kitchen is sunny and bright, featuring white subway tiles, striking blue accents and eggshell-blue cabinetry.

“Originally the kitchen had a doorway that divided it from the dining area. We decided to break down the wall and have a simple arch to visually separate the two zones. This turned out to be a great way to open up the space and connect it to the larger living and dining spaces,” recalls Amarnathan.

“The Spanish theme led us to these elegant Moorish blue-green tiles for the backsplash. The design was fitting as an accent feature, so we incorporated it just above the stovetop and used white tile across the rest of the space. The white tile, with its rough edges, inspires an old-world charm. We laid it subway style to break things up in the long kitchen,” Amarnathan says.

The cabinets feature a custom shade of blue. “After many iterations of grey, green and blue, we picked this beautiful robin’s-egg blue. The colour instantly lifts the space and brings in a modern Spanish casita (cottage) feel,” says Amarnathan.

The countertop is crafted of white quartz and the sink, of light grey granite. The handpicked hardware, highlighted by white ceramic knobs, channels a Mediterranean appeal.

The dining room hosts a solid teak-wood table in a natural finish. Mercury glass pendants suspended from a wooden panel add a dose of sparkle to the dining space.

“We custom-made simple modern wood chairs and a bench in a light teak finish to complement the table,” adds Amarnathan.

The master bedroom is a cocoon of rich finishes. The smoked oak-finish wardrobes and warm grey wall lead the eyes to a wooden half-poster bed. The lighting scheme is dominated by a golden lattice wall fixture, while the windows are sheathed in natural fibre blinds, overlaid by soft flowy white curtains.

“The bed was the client’s choice. It was a great way to bring in that old-world four-poster look in a lighter, modern avatar,” says Amarnathan.

Referring to the framed wall embellishment, Amarnathan explains, “The client wanted to use her mother’s wedding saree in some way in the home. We got a piece of it framed as art to go above the headboard. Such a bold statement piece and one with so much heart.”

The daughter’s bedroom is a chic space designed to grow with her personality and evolving needs. A baby-blue bed is juxtaposed with a grey-and-white striped wall. A grey dhurrie, fun framed prints, a large jute basket, and a soft pouffe add a playful edge to the space.

“The bed is designed like a daybed, with a headboard and footboard in similar heights. It has beautiful beaded vertical slats, reminiscent of a Jenny Lind bed. It was perfect for conjuring the warm Spanish cottage vibe we wanted,” shares Amarnathan.

A large window to the right of the door is dressed in quirky blue and grey shades. It overarches a custom-made window seat with storage. The wardrobes, a neutral white, lend luminosity to the room.

The guest bedroom is an understated space, with muted colours, pared-back decor and warm wood finishes. The room houses a simple white bed, rope light fixtures and a wood-toned wardrobe.

“It was a conscious choice to keep the room simple, due to its minimal use. The window treatments mirror those in the master bedroom, and a gold mirror adds a dash of glam,” notes Amarnathan.
