We are doing a new build. Which bricks are best for the exterior if we want a bagged finish. Commons? Or other?

dannii100, if you are bagging them use the cheapest bricks you can get! You'll be covering them with the bagging anyway.

Through the 70's and eighties Gold Coast project home builder Paradise Homes offered bagged and painted brickwork as their standard finish to their contemporary designed homes. Now 40 years later they still look good provided the paintwork has been maintained. They used clay commons most of the time and occasionally concrete commons but never double height bricks. They simply look bad. The bricklayer still had to be good and not too rough. Once the bricks were laid with joints struck flush, they used hessian (hence the term bagging) dipped in mortar and a sponge to run over the bricks. It was important to get the right consistency where the bagging provided a texture but allowed the brickwork to still show through to give that old fashioned finish. Once dry and cured the work was acid washed, rinsed and allowed to dry completely before painting. It's a very legitimate way to finish your brickwork while introducing colour to your home. However, many people assumed it was cheap when cost wise it wasn't so. It's a great finish for contemporary designed homes such as mid-century modern homes where the architecture is simple and effective.
