I agree with Deborah Eade about putting on warm clothing before pumping up the heat. Yes, of course we all need to conserve energy for economic and ecological reasons, amongst others. But we can’t just mindlessly and obediently ‘seal up’ our houses. We need to think carefully about our interior world. Indoor pollution, along with poor ventilation with damp and mould aren’t great for us. This is an American article but it applies in the U.K. too.

Chemistrykaren, yes, and those awful open-plan offices with fitted carpets, banks of computers and printers, permanent lighting, A/C and sealed windows now look so unhealthy - pretty much like being locked in an long-haul flight 5 days a week. In France, sadly, each year there are people who die of CO poisoning - so easily avoided by airing the bedroom each day, sleeping with the windows just slightly ajar and installing CO and smoke detectors.
