French photographer Fabien Charuau specialises in architecture and interiors. He likes to think of himself as an Indophile, for he loves everything Indian.

Charuau has contributed to the country’s leading publications, also photographing works for top design firms. His solo exhibition in 2010, titled The Great Unwashed, at the Matthieu Foss Gallery in Mumbai sparked interest amongst the design and visual arts community for his vibrant works. He is also associated with Chatterjee & Lal, a gallery in Mumbai where he has exhibited several of his digital artworks.

In a first, Charuau curates a special selection of images for Houzz and gives a peek into his prolific portfolio. From residences, churches to studio shoots, he tells us why each photograph is special to him.

“Goa is my favourite destination in India – for photography, for meeting with friends and for lazing on the beach. And this home in Goa is close to my heart – it belongs to fashion designers Jagvir Matharoo and Martino Caramia of The Flame Store.”

Location: Brittany
“While growing up in a small village in Brittany, France, I would go for Mass every Sunday and spent hours looking at this painting. In fact, I recently started a series of photos on retables – the structures behind the altar. They all look different and have a strong personality.”

“Jama Masjid in Delhi fascinates me – it shows how India’s past opens up seamlessly to the present.”

“I love shooting for architect Ashiesh Shah – I like his imagination. His designs are like a theatre stage, the artworks transformed into actors of a play.”

“Another one of Ashiesh Shah’s fascinating designs – I like his eye for detail.”

“I don’t usually use artificial lights during my shoots because I don’t want to interfere with the lighting aesthetic of the architect. But with studio sets (like this one) I love being very technical. If I remember correctly, I used 15 strobes on this set to create a natural light effect.”

“This was a great opportunity – photographing M.F. Husain’s painting in B.V. Doshi’s Gufa.”

“Interior photography delights me when a space is awash in natural light. This is one of the most interesting shoots I’ve done lately – a home designed by Japanese architect, Katsushi Goto.”

“This is a part of an ongoing series on les Espaces d’Abraxas near Paris, designed by one of my favourite architects, Ricardo Bofill.”
