Ajmer Houzz: Colour, Comfort & Tradition Rule in This Grand Home
Modern spaces infused with traditional accents makes this home by VB Design Studio fit for royalty
The clients wanted a house that was distinguished, graceful and would befit the lifestyle of the dwellers. Vipin Bakiwala of VB Design Studio delivered a home that is filled with Indian craftsmanship and cultural evidences. Works of art take centre stage in most of the rooms, drawing attention, tying in design elements, bringing life and atmosphere to the space. Bakiwala said, “The clients entrusted us with the design of this house with the faith that it shall one day convey the same warmth and benevolence that dwells in their hearts for the people of this town (Kekri).”
“The east-facing villa exudes the blissful essence of a palace; it shines with dawn and shows its true colours. Tall, robust pillars create the needful buffer space for the residence. Thin aluminium screens between them double as veils or blinds for the rooms on the first floor,” says Bakiwala.

When the sun filters through the screens, it reiterates the patterns of the intricate plaster work. The palm trees throw their shadows on the windows and lend a touch of softness to the facade.
Pink granite paves the way to two entrance doors. “These doors fall on adjacent paths,” says Bakiwala. “One leads to the living space and the other to the drawing room.”

The drawing room entrance lobby is adorned with a wooden panel that has five inset arches. They feature intricate hand-work and floral gold-leaf artwork or swarna patra.

The colourful painting of a palace courtyard catches the eye as one enters the drawing room, and underlines the palatial vibe that runs through the house. Pink sofas, chandeliers and wooden pillars create a warm and inviting ambience.

“Moving out of the drawing room lobby, we reach the spacious living space, which further opens up to different spaces. On its left are the kitchen and dinette, the client’s bedroom, the staircase and the TV room,” says Bakiwala.

The highlight of the dining room is the painting with a richly detailed double border of leaves and trees that encloses more borders of decorative geometric patterns in pastel hues. This makes a gorgeous and vibrant setting for a majestic Mughal-style portrait and a Jain shloka that narrates the importance of food and takes you back to traditional references.

The master bedroom combines wall panelling, floral geometric patterns on the false ceiling and pink marble flooring, adding to the serene but luxurious aura. The four-poster bed and a wall installation of kilangi artwork (a traditional Rajasthani jewellery craft style) tie the look together.

Attached to the bedroom are the master bathroom and dressing room, which continue the pink colour scheme.
The elder son’s bedroom is done up in iridescent blue combined with white and gold. “The headboard of the four-poster bed has gold-leaf vines and mayur-kanthi [‘peacock-throat’, referring to the iridescent blue] patterns,” says Bakiwala.

Blue agate stone and peacock-blue cornices tie in the bathroom’s look with the colour scheme of the bedroom.
The younger son’s bedroom uses soothing shades of pistachio, complemented by the upholstery, furnishings, and wallpaper. A colourful painting adds vibrancy to the room.

The attached bathroom follows the soft-toned theme of the bedroom, with cappuccino onyx marble juxtaposed with the warmth of wooden details.
“Designed for three, the kids’ bedroom is bright and colourful. It features platform beds with cushioned bed backs, a curved wallpaper ceiling and vertical wooden posts,” says Bakiwala.

Next to the kids’ room is a semi-open study area holding two study table units placed opposite each other. They are paired with customised chairs, with their backs to each other. “The space is designed to minimise the feeling of compactness,” Bakiwala says.
Natural light and floral upholstery give the feeling of being close to nature.
