As home to a family of five, including two teenagers and a septuagenarian, this breezy twelfth-floor apartment had to meet multigenerational needs. That was the essence of the brief that came to Snehal and Badri Suthar, co-founders and principal architects of tHE gRID Architects.
“They wanted a home that was authentic to who they are as a unit. Also, the apartment is blessed with pleasing views and ventilation, with no obstructive buildings in the surroundings. We decided to mirror this visual sentiment on the inside, too, by keeping the plan open,” says Snehal.

The front door, made of fluted oak wood and metal panels in gun-metal finish, welcomes visitors into a low-ceilinged foyer that serves as an overture to the living room.
“We chose wood for the front door because it possesses an interesting inherent character that comes from having weathered many a decade. It has been used throughout the home in many shapes and forms,” says Bhadri.

The living room is dominated by a palette of wood, wicker, natural fabric and stone, displayed in the timber ceiling and accents, pendant lamps, cotton and linen upholstery, and concrete tile flooring. Dove-grey sofas face each other down the length of the living area, while single-seaters, resembling pouffes with backs, stand before the window. On one side, a wooden platform extends from underneath the sofa, doubling as a side table. Curated art and decor around the room, most of which are inspired and made by local artists and sculptors, serve as an aesthetic overlay to the underlying design scheme.

The adjacent wall is defined by a stucco finish and a sweeping oak-wood console.
“Social gatherings are regular features in the clients’ lives. We wanted to channel a spirit of warmth into the home such that it would be welcoming to anyone who entered,” Snehal says.

The home’s open-plan layout affords seamlessness between the semi-private spaces. In the same vein, the dining room is a fluid extension of the living room, mirroring an almost identical palette.

A natural-wood farmhouse-style table, surrounded by complementary chairs, occupies the heart of the room. A console in an identical wood grain lines the wall to the side, while broad wicker pendant lights, like those in the living area, illuminate the dining table.
“The relationship of the spaces is fluid, and the living and dining rooms seemingly flow into each other, creating an unstructured, unconfined environment. This allows for an airy and expansive feel,” notes Bhadri.

The balcony abuts the dining room. A bespoke jhula (swing) and two wooden chairs compose the seating layout here, providing an ideal perch for enjoying open views of the city.

A frosted glass wall divides the family media room from the living room.
Here, a dark wood-panelled wall plays host to the television and console, while a powder-blue sectional stands against the wall opposite. A lone wicker pendant highlights the corner by the window.

Oak-wood panels and swathes of white envelop the master bedroom. An entirely wood-panelled wall stands in for the headboard, parlaying into nightstands on either side of the bed. Cushioned lime-green armchairs provide welcome seating by the window. The floor is clad in concrete tiles.
“The amalgamation of subtle colours, textured panelling and ample daylight lends vitality to the home. The sporadic splashes of colour elevate the balance, adding visual interest and accentuating the space where needed,” says Snehal.

The kids’ bedroom, fitted with twin beds, showcases a palette of grey and white. A solid grey panel backgrounds one bed, extending onto the ceiling and with a large red disc at headboard height to give a fillip to the colour scheme. The other bed is zoned by a backdrop of wood panelling balanced with a dash of white. Against the adjacent wall is a wooden wardrobe and an open shelving unit that houses the young occupants’ books and belongings.
