Span House, so named by the architects whose family is the client, is actually twin homes meant for two brothers – Jaymin’s father and his brother – and their families, built on a single plot of land. The requirement was clear, say the Patels – “to have two residences with a common garden space in between for both the families to unite together.” Here, we tour one half of the pair – the home of Disha and Jaymin Patel, principal architects of J & D Architects, who reside in one of the houses with Jaymin’s parents, the other also having been constructed and designed by the duo for Jaymin’s uncle.

The family has their home on a site located on the outskirts of Ahmedabad, with plenty of green cover around.
The twin residences have almost identical spaces, built with basic Vastu considerations (but very different interiors) and are connected via a common garden. The buildings are L-shaped, with the two first-floor cantilever balconies reaching out to each other.

“We planned all the major openings of the house towards the north side, so they could get diffused light from full-height glazed windows and views of the landscape outside,” Patel says.
The homes have been mindfully constructed with the view to connect with nature, be it maximising the presence of the lush garden or inviting natural light in via full-height windows. The core spaces (living, dining and kitchen) are all connected to the garden.
The exterior is marked by bold floating canopies. Patel goes on to explain, “Both houses have the warmth of exposed brick with RCC-finish roofs, the timelessness of marble cladding and the modernity of large glass openings.”

Grey-veined granite steps lead up to the main door, complementing the colours of the concrete roof and the marble-clad façade. A pair of sculptures grace the entrance, welcoming visitors.
The entrance vestibule transitions from a single-height ceiling to an imposing double-height one. To the left is an impressive curved staircase in black granite that leads to the library, two bedrooms and a home theatre on the first floor. The accent wall is in textured travertine marble, laid out in a pattern of squares, while a cascading chandelier illuminates the space.
The living room is enclosed in glass walls that serve as a connect between the outdoors and the indoors. The stylish blue L-shaped sofa is offset by a rustic ceiling in exposed RCC.

Polished, reflective marble floors accentuate the size of the living area, as do full-length drapes.
The family room is the heart of the house, opening out to the gardens. It is an open space connected to the kitchen and dining area. Bright-blue walls are balanced by grey sofas and floors laid with pale Italian marble. A sole armchair in green is a differing element adding colour and quirky style to the space.

A leather-finish ottoman, coupled with a live-edge wood stool that is adorned with a striking sculpture, forms the centre table.

The TV in the family room is set against a slatted panel with grey polyurethane (PU) coating. The panel serves as a decorative partition between the foyer and the family lounge room.

The dining room lies beside the open kitchen. A high-polish onyx and wood table with a sculpted wooden base is flanked by green leather-finish chairs. Beside the table is a resin wash basin that sits on a white console. The wall behind the wash basin is designed with hexagonal mosaic tiles and vertical wooden strips (the latter a motif that runs through the house).
The master bedroom, used by Jaymin’s parents, lies on the ground floor beside the living room. A palette of contrasting colours brings muted vibrancy, with blue curtains, a pink fabric wall panel and a mustard rug that anchors the room.

The guest bedroom continues with the motif of vertical wooden strips on the wall juxtaposed with diagonal grey patterns which add an element of design and texture to the room. A plush blue rug and a tan easy chair highlight a corner of the room.
The attached bathroom is designed in ivory and beige tiles with a long counter top and a self-lit mirror.
