It is common practice to not give much thought to the windows (design) in one’s home and to take them for granted. It’s as if we are resigned to the style that everyone uses. Why? Apart from being the key element that connect the inside to the outside, they also hugely impact the spaces around them.

So here are fresh and different ways to look at windows and to incorporate them into your home.
Angus Mackenzie Architect
1. Looking out
Always wanted a bay window in your house but the structure didn’t allow it? Try the cantilever technique using wooden beams and posts to create this bay window, jutting out or into your house. This can become a perfect space to cozy up with some friends or family over a cup of coffee. Not to mention the inside-outside feel it will bring to your space.
Monica Khanna Designs
Seize any opportunity you can to create a full size glass window. This kind in the image is a full floor-to-height window, which also makes the room look so much bigger.

Tip: Make sure you do not break down any important structural beams or columns of the structure.

2. Elegant blacks
Black, if used right can add an edgy elegance to our spaces. So why not use it for windows? A thick black frame with thinner frame members works great on tall windows and in spaces where you want to make most of the view.

These frames can be used in balcony windows, internal doors and partitions, giving a charming perspective to how windows can be perceived as partitions.

3. Full length galore
Full length windows make the most of bringing the outdoors in. Whether sliding, fixed or partly flexible, full-length windows add more space to a room and make the most of light.
If the size and the structure of your bathroom allows you to create bigger windows, then go for this look designed by Moriq Interiors. The architects offer a picture perfect composition to bring in breathtaking views.

4. Floating appeal
Usually you shouldn’t block windows. But sometimes, a different context makes it a really good idea. Bring in floating furniture while keeping the windows intact. In the case of this bathroom here, smaller, floating mirrors have been attached in front of the windows. This gives the necessary privacy yet allows the lovely views.
Hoedemaker Pfeiffer
Tip: In case of kitchens, linear shelves and storage units can be added. In this way, space is not only optimised but an uncommon design tool is also introduced into the interiors.

5. Turning torso
The rotating pivot windows change the space equilibrium around them. They also bring a level of sophistication and a contemporary tone to the room.

A pivot window seems to bring in another dimension, and extra depth to the space due to its unique open-close motion. And it is such a delight to look at! Ideal for in-between living areas, corridors, and bathroom spaces.

6. Connected within
Windows need not only connect the outside and the inside, they can also be used within the house. Internal bedrooms or intermediate spaces such as semi-formal living rooms may also have these to connect spaces as in this house by Moriq Interiors.

7. Light up
The concept of clerestory windows is not new. They have been used through history in cathedrals, churches, palaces and temples. These can work magic in areas where there is a double height space or where there is an absence of regular window space.

In this Delhi home by Kumar Moorthy & Associates, clerestory windows have been used to fill a voluminous space with light.
Architecture BRIO
Pat yourself on the back if you have decided to use them as a skylight in your bathroom. They bring in a gorgeous amount of light and a connection to the outdoors as they do in this space by Architecture BRIO.

8. Innovative treatments
Based on your decor style, windows can be framed and accentuated in different ways. An iron grill or laser cut jaali can be annexed to the mundane window to create a fresh look.
SPASM
Here’s how you can add a twist to your regular window. Introduce a laser cut panel (Indian pattern shown in the image) on the outside of the window to create a jaali effect. See the beautiful way in which light streams into the Diya House designed by SPASM.

These can also be designed based on the climate of the region, where they can help create heating or cooling effects.

Stain glass windows filter in light and bring a sense of whimsy to a space. Pair them with a wooden, ethnic look like in the space shown or add to minimal, contemporary decor and infuse a shock of colour and tradition.

9. Flip side
Louvres have been extensively used for their benefits in modulating vision, light and for their ease of use. They can be converted into full or part lengths openings. This space designed by Aamir and Hameeda Associates make the bathroom space look bigger when open and interactive with the surrounding context.
