A small bedroom that is an oasis of order and tranquility – sounds like a tall order? It can be done. The first requirement is, of course, somewhere to stash stuff out of sight. The first challenge, too, is exactly that – combining the key words ‘stash’ and ‘out of sight’ successfully. The dilemma is the seeming choice between scant storage or bulky wardrobes that cramp the style of a compact space. Get past the cupboard conundrum with some smart and creative thinking. Here are nine handsome storage ideas that bring neatness to a room without making it feel boxed in.

1. The mirror ruse
You already know this trick, don’t you? Mirrors multiply the perception of space and make the room feel larger than it actually is. Having reflective mirrors on the wardrobe panels not only makes a modish statement, but also substitutes for the dressing-up mirror.

2. Built-ins that exploit niches
Ready-made freestanding furniture does not always fit perfectly on limited bedroom walls. In such cases, niches can prove to be a boon. Built-in wardrobes can be constructed on site to make every inch of the recessed niche count. In this room, an awkward, narrow space is used efficiently by installing a tall wardrobe.
3. The headboard wall expanded
Wall-to-wall space has been utilised here as storage cabinets and cupboards. This wall in a child’s bedroom features a bonus open shelf for displaying toys and books. It completes the setup by connecting the wardrobes on the two sides.
The Wee House Company
Take a cue from the storage unit in this wee room. The wall space left over on either side of the bed has been used to install segregated wardrobes. The clever design also accommodates side tables.
Organized Living
4. Open capsule
A capsule wardrobe is a small collection of clothes and accessories worn frequently (for a particular length of time). All you need is piece of furniture at hand that stores this. In this way, one can have a small, efficiently organised storage space within the bedroom. Additional clothing can be stored at a different place – the dresser chest, a nearby closet or store room.

5. Surround solution
Here, the wall around the doorway is fully utilised to have floor-to-ceiling cabinets. Adding overhead storage is great for lofty bedrooms with a small footprint. Such wardrobes can pack a punch over a little floor area.
The Couture Rooms
6. Sliding doors
In small rooms, small savings can make a big impact. As opposed to hinged doors, sliding doors free up considerable floor area, which helps unhindered movement round the room.

7. No doors
Wardrobe doors take up extra floor and wall space for swinging open. Sliding doors might not work if you have to work with a very limited width, as well. A well-organised closet can be left open or covered with curtains to save that extra space. Neutral-coloured curtains impart a laid-back and relaxed feel to this bedroom.

8. Double duty
This compact room cleverly uses the wardrobe to separate the ensuite from the bedroom. This solution makes the most of a small space by introducing an open plan.
Purple Backyard
9. Understated with lighter shades
Lighter hues do not overpower the decor, instead adding to a sense of space if it is in limited supply. This lofty wardrobe provides ample storage to the small bedroom and manages to stay undemanding and light.
