9 Extraordinary Basin Designs

There is a whole world beyond white ceramic; here are basins that will make your bathroom sparkle

Pragati Gupta Saxena
Pragati Gupta Saxena14 December 2016
Houzz India Contributor. I've always had my heart and soul channelled into one thing -- creativity. Amidst the hassles of life, one bright morning, life happened to me! Since then, I've been pursuing my passion. So one would find me either glued to my laptop, or in a chaotic room full of paper shavings and paints, or in sweats revamping the house, or doing the salsa while I whip up another dessert! Whatever it has to be, it must be creative!

While a lot gets discussed about the tub and the fixtures, we sometimes forget the good old basin. Gone are the days when the domestic sink was just the ordinary, white ceramic thing with a bland faucet. The basin is now in the front seat and can get as innovative and decorative as you wish. Here are some examples.

1. The ramp
Fabulous, right? This trough sink is so elegant. The clean pattern of the tiles, the shallow sink, and the sliding ramp come together in this sophisticated piece. The stainless steel faucets and wall-size mirror complete the minimal look.
2. Mosaic
I am personally a huge fan of delicate sink bowls with Indian motifs or middle-eastern patterns. These basins in combination with a tasteful marble top constantly remind me of vacations. These sinks are not only beautiful but quite easy on the pocket too.

Tip: Add mosaic tiles backsplash to cover the running space between the counter and the mirror. It will complete the look.

3. Monolithic
If you prefer more earthy materials, stone and exposed cement basins are just for you. This bathroom designed by Dipen Gada and Associates makes most of the natural texture of the material and uses a cement basin that is smooth and polished on the inside and slightly rough on the outside. The raw cement counter top adds to the rustic yet rich feel of the unit. Of course, the gorgeous open shower area and the different surrounding textures of the floor as well as the accent wall don’t hurt either.

Tip: You could also opt for natural stone sinks – they come in variety of materials and patterns, and are very durable as they retain their essence for a long time.

4. Glass
Here is a creative twist to the classic glass sink on top of the marble top. Hand-painted in layers of black, orange and gold, this sink brings in a very stylised look to the space.

5. The island
I’m always amazed at how a well-thought design can turn something as basic as a sink into something so spectacular. Consider this design. This sink acts like a standalone sculptural piece and brings all the focus into a small, compact area.

6. LED drama
This oversized raised top with an in-built sink brings so much drama to this bathroom. Though I would suggest being careful about the colour palette of your bathroom before finalising the LED lights, to save from tones clashing with each other and becoming jarring.

7. Cuboids
There’s something extremely enticing about the simplicity of this square grey stone cube sink. It’s modern and also beautifully luxe. Made of soapstone, this deep basin brings in an old-world charm with equal measures of contemporary design.

8. Beach house
If you’re one of those who constantly long for the sea and beach, then let’s bring it home. Ditch the circles and the squares and bring in shells and clams. Add in artwork on the wall and baskets on the shelf, and a few souvenirs to complete the look. Don’t forget to add a pop of turquoise to enhance the effect.

9. Waterfall
This is seriously epic. Like having a spa-like faucet at home that resembles a waterfall. And this extraordinary design is controlled by foot pedals. What fun! Pro: You never have to worry about touching an unclean faucet again. Con: Too much of water consumption. But doesn’t it look beautiful anyway?
