I second the recommendation for Yellow Pear heirloom tomatoes - last year I bought a few heirloom tomato plants on a whim when the garden center was clearancing them late in the spring. The Yellow Pears produced like crazy - excited to plant them again, but earlier this time :)

Three times I planted vegetable gardens using black plastic and they all turned out great. Very productive, easy to keep watered, no weeding, and fewer bugs. Great for tomatoes, squash, and peppers. Hotter.

Buy a large heavy black plastic sheet. Lay it out. on damp soil. Dig the edges under with a shovel. Use tomato cages in the corners and middle for supplemental anchoring. Then just cut holes where you want to plant. Make them bigger as the plant grows. Cut additional holes in the plastic where water puddles. Throw some mud and rocks on top if it seems to be blowing.

I gave up on gardening! Our aluminum fence doesn’t keep out the rabbits. The invisible voles destroy from below. Our state was number 2 in hail damage in 2020. Being a northern state, frost can come as late as Memorial Day so late planting limits choices. Our wind is sometimes outrageous. If they ever figure out how to store wind power, we’ll be able to power the world. Multiple times a season when hail/heavy rain comes, my three beautiful, heavy front door planters of flowers are drug inside. So, with the rabbits, voles, late planting, hail and wind, I threw up my hands & appreciate the farmer’s market.
