Remember that you must be neat in an open plan home….dinner guests don’t need to see all the pots and utensils you have used to prepare the meal. Have a pantry in the kitchen where you can stow the used pots before dinner….out of view. When you clear the table, put everything into the dishwasher immediately. No visible clutter.

This is really interesting, keen for tips on a small kitchen, dining, lounge. We have really limited space so having the sofa in the middle of the room as suggested is not an option and zoning is hard.

Before designing the zones it is best to consider the frequent traffic areas. I am often puzzled by dining tables that are not near the kitchen ie sitting room furniture in between cook and eat space. This is not just impractical but also a safety issue. Carrying hot food to the table whilst negotiating round furniture/rugs etc is not good. I get that maybe adults want to keep a sight line of children but free passageways should be included in any floor plan from the start. It is no doubt a challenge to get open plan right for the household but it is a great way for family living.
