Gazebos are the epitome of outdoor living. And why not? They offer the best vantage point to your surroundings and the ideal place to retreat to on hot summer days. Given their open design, the breezes flow freely through the structure, while the roof provides welcome cooling shade. For these reasons, they have become quite the rage in warm and sunny climates as outdoor entertaining and lounging spaces. From sweeping canopies to wooden pergolas, check out these eight inspirations from Indian homes to find out why they are an outdoor must-have.

1. Classic carved stone
Referred to as summer houses, kiosks or screen houses, traditional gazebos in India have been free-standing stone structures that are usually octagonal in shape. The design consists of pillars, a roof and arched openings on the sides, while some more elaborate ones come with decorative lattice panels or carvings. This intricately carved number makes an already beautiful outdoor space even more scenic. A bench is all it needs to be a tranquil zone for meditation.

2. Poolside retreat
Gazebos add a personal touch to any landscape. They are all about creating a comfortable place where you can enjoy the outdoors. With its open sides, this gazebo designed by Class apart has a front-row seat to the pool, while the cosy love-seat and sheer curtains bring the comforts of indoor living outside.

3. Rustic outdoor dining
With a setting like this, who wouldn’t want to dine outdoors all the time? This Delhi farmhouse’s gazebo has a contemporary yet rustic vibe, thanks to its thatched roof, rough-finished brick platform and ethnic accessories.

Tip: In case mosquitoes are an issue, install mesh screens. This way you are still in the outdoors to enjoy the fresh air and the view, but keep the creepy-crawlies out.

4. Intimate getaway
When a solid pergola-like structure is not an option, go for a more elegant and intimate look instead. Shade sails and curtained canopies are popular garden fixtures. For instance, SAK Designs created this perfectly inviting spot with its bright-white seating, which is juxtaposed against natural materials like wood and stone.

5. Party pavilion
Gazebos are multifunctional. They can be a place to sit and catch up on your reading, or host a family get-together. This shingled-roof pavilion by DWG Designs is simply calling out for a party. Its corner location and the use of concrete and stone to construct the spacious gazebo makes it the ideal spot to set up an outdoor barbecue nook for a night of grilling some smoking-hot fare and serving up a couple of cold ones.

6. Contemporary oasis
With a minimalist concrete frame, this pavilion by Abin Design Studio is the perfect spot to enjoy the landscaped garden up close. Designed to blend in rather than stand out, the gazebo is surrounded by lush bushes.

7. Stargazing perch
A natural wooden pergola not only balances out the man-made elements in the garden, but also acts as a sculptural element. The use of wooden slats instead of a completely solid roof structure gives this gazebo by Hiren Patel Architects a light and airy quality, while the natural-wood tones complement the green of the garden. Imagine stargazing under this pergola – what a wonderful way to spend a summer evening!

8. Splash of colour
The Ashleys create a laid-back vibe for the sit-out under this freestanding gazebo. The natural earth tones of the space are perfectly punctuated by the sudden splash of light green, blue and pink from the rug, cushions and foldable mattresses. The thatched roof adds an artistic element to the space, and also naturally maintains a relatively constant, cooler temperature within the shaded area.
