Originating in 18th-century France, chaise longue is French for ‘long chair’, often shortened to just ‘chaise’ nowadays. It’s basically a recliner with a backrest that is upholstered for bedroom-style comfort and optimum relaxation – simply divine. The contemporary avatars of these chaises offer the same opulence and comfort as the classic variety, and are also available in compact and localised designs to suit modern homes. These swoon-worthy pieces can fit into the living room, study or even bedroom.
The classic tufted
One of the oldest chaise styles is the classic tufted, which can double as a daybed. In the image, the tufted, contoured chaise adds to the inviting feel of the lounge space. The refreshing green brings a pop of colour to the otherwise subtle decor. With plenty of room to put your feet up and that soft, cushiony padding, a siesta is all that I can think about!

Iqrup + Ritz (India)
Desi chaise
This space, styled by Iqrup + Ritz, is another example of how a chaise can be adapted to suit Indian homes. The traditional wooden design with turned and carved legs is complemented with simple beige upholstery and a curved backrest. Embroidered cushions in vibrant hues complete the Indian look.

Double-backed lounging
Chaises with double backs (a back rest at each end) can be strategically placed in the heart of the living room as shown above. This gives you the flexibility to face either side to converse with guests or family, while reclining comfortably. The light-brown velvet-upholstered chaise lends effortless opulence to this area. The pillows and bolsters add to the comfort of the chaise.

His ’n’ hers
Create an intimate and de-stressing spot for two with matching chaises. In this image, the two classic patterned damask pieces with wingback headboards produce an immediate sense of relaxation. Perfect for enjoying the view while sipping a cold pina colada.

Bamboo-inspired for outdoor lounging
Chaise longue designs have evolved and many of them are suitable for outdoor purposes. If you have a balcony or a garden, then a weather-resistant bamboo chaise can be a great option.

Tip: Pair this outdoor chaise with weather-proof fabric for the mattress.

DIY sectional chaise
A chaise can be combined with a sectional sofa to add more stylish seating. As shown in this space by Rakeshh Jeswaani Interiors, a sleek grey chaise is combined with the L-shaped sofa to create a casual lounging experience. The chaise has a padded headboard and side-rests, upping the comfort quotient. The great thing about this configuration is that you can separate the chaise from the sofa as per your needs.

Tête-à-tête chaise
The term tête-à-tête chaise is commonly used for an S-shaped sofa on which two people can sit face-to-face and have private conversations. The peppy cushions here offset the beige hues with some colourful contrast.
Fadd Studio
Quirky Victorian
Fadd Studio gives the Victorian chaise a modern and unique twist by playing with its shape. The white-and-blue design is perfect for a corner space or passageway. Though it lacks the length of a traditional chaise, its innovative and extraordinary design makes up for the fact that you can’t stretch your legs.
