Wood accents on house exteriors bring warmth and a sense of richness, with oodles of character and style that are unique to this material. Wood has an attractive grain that renders itself beautifully, and it is available in numerous varieties and colour options. Additionally, wood is sturdy, long-lasting (if treated correctly) and strong; it can be easily cut, varnished or repaired, and the dry installation method makes it easy to work with. So, if you are constructing a new home or renovating an existing one, here are seven ways you can work with wood on your building’s exterior.

1. As cladding
There is nothing to beat the beauty of natural wood. Here you see an extensive use of wood cladding, which looks very appealing. Also, the natural colour variations in the wooden facade give the building a dynamic look. Note that the wooden planks need to be cut to the desired size and thickness before installation.

Tip: One can also consider high pressure laminate (HPL), wood plastic composite (WPC) or exterior tiles in wooden tones as a cladding material.

2. Create an accent feature
Add an element of wow to the building’s facade by creating interesting focal points. In this example, the wood projections frame the windows and bring extra functionality by providing shade.

3. Introduce louvres
Give a modern look to your home with a louvred screen. The repetitive pattern of wooden slats create louvres, which establish an excellent inside-outside connect. It also filters sunlight and works as an effective shading device.

4. At the entrance
With wood, you can make a great first impression and achieve a resort-like feel for your home with a grand entrance. This design detail works best in farmhouses or homes that are spread across a large expanse of area. Here, the entrance gate is elegantly crafted in wood. The wooden pillars support a roof structure with terracotta tile cladding to create a covered entrance pavilion.

5. As a boundary wall
Adding panels of wood to your boundary walls gives an elegant, contemporary look to the home and complements the outdoors.

Tip: It is important to treat seasoned wood for termite resistance and with proper sealants before installation. This will protect the wood from moisture absorption that could cause dampness or fungal growth. Regular maintenance is needed to keep your wooden exteriors in good shape.

In this house, wood has been used as vertical fencing. The wood, stone and landscaped greens blend wonderfully with each other; the subdued lighting instantly adds drama to the outdoors.

6. Combine with clay tiles
I love the way wood combines with the terracotta tiles here. Also, the entrance porch has been designed with traditional motifs in wood; it adds a touch of artistry and imparts a timeless appeal to the home.

7. Construct a pergola
Fabricate a wooden pergola in the open terraces that form a part of the exteriors, to create a semi-open enclosure. In this example, the pergola provides shade from the sun and creates a continuous play of light and shadow through the day.
