Steel is a versatile metal that fits seamlessly into a classic or a modular kitchen layout. Design purists use it in backsplashes, sinks, countertops, cabinetry, and more. You can embrace it in combination with wood, other metals or just on its own. Low on maintenance and high on aesthetic appeal, budget-friendly and durable steel checks all the right boxes for transforming your kitchen.
1. In your kitchen cabinetry
If you are impressed by the sleek designs and stringent standards for cleanliness seen in professional kitchens, then steel is the metal for you. You can team it with other materials like wood for a more homely appeal or go bold with fabricated steel cabinetry, as shown above. The flat-panel cabinets and drawers clearly shine in this kitchen. Instead of just being an accent material, it is the star of the kitchen. For neatness freaks like me, the added advantage is getting rid of finger marks and oil stains with a quick wipe. Along with the main cabinetry, you can also use steel for:

Along with the main cabinetry, you can also use steel for:
- Racks: Pull-out racks like these are a blessing when space is at a premium. Featuring a minimalistic design with sturdy steel hardware, you can pack a punch by squeezing in more – and saving every bit of precious space.
- Drawers: Steel-finish drawers like the ones in this space are designed keeping storage constraints in mind. So you can keep the cutlery in the shallow upper drawers while the bigger ones at the bottom have room for pots, pans, kadais, etc.
- Cabinet and drawer handles: Steel handles are a subtle way to hone the metal look in your kitchen. You can pick from a range of cutting-edge designs, including elongated or curvy shapes. The matte-finish stainless steel handles in this image create a beautiful contrast with the dark wood.
2. In light fixtures
Something as simple as light fixtures or chandeliers can bring stylish steel to your kitchen. Taking inspiration from industrial decor, this kitchen with classic woodwork sports two stainless steel lights hanging from the ceiling. Layering shades of grey are combined to bring in some welcome warmth to the coldness of the metal. Steel is also used in the appliances and cabinet knobs to tie everything together.

3. Through appliances
Being highly heat resistant, stainless steel is the preferred material for modern-day appliances like the microwave, the refrigerator and even the humble juicer. Here, the designer has kept these modular units in a cluster. The asymmetrical wooden niche into which they are fitted brings an element of softness to the all-metal hub.

4. With steel sinks and faucets
Stainless steel faucets and sinks come in a plethora of shapes and sizes, giving you plenty of choices. The metal is rust-proof, won’t chip, fade or crack and is affordable too! And it’s easy to use and clean, a plus with the stubborn stains that Indian masalas leave. This picture features a modish double sink with shiny faucets that contrasts dramatically with the dark granite countertop. Such a sink has the advantage letting us wash the utensils in one basin while the other is free for dishes to dry,
or for washing vegetables when prepping for a meal.

5. In countertops and chairs
Steel countertops combine style and functionality in a hardworking surface, making them a sensible addition for kneading or rolling dough as well as for other cooking jobs. In the image, chequered mesh chairs are used instead of stools to give some back support. The steel backsplash near the sink adds to the ambience.
Tip: Steel does tend to get scratched, so if using it on the countertop, keep the cutting board close at hand for your chopping and slicing.

6. Through accessories/utensils
Most Indian kitchens do have their fair share of steel plates, bowls, pots, etc. But if you don’t, here’s one more reason to bring them in. Being durable and sturdy, steel utensils are ideal for everyday use – and a more sensible alternative to china or glass dishes that break easily. So the grease and food can be rigorously scrubbed away in these pots and pans without you panicking over precious dishes being chipped or broken in the cleaning process.

And don’t forget a covered steel trash can for the kitchen. The easy-to-clean steel bins don’t carry lingering smells like the plastic ones do. They are a great deal more hygienic. Plus, with everyday wear and tear, steel ensures longevity, too.
