It was a simpler time back then when hosting a party at home meant picking up a couple of six-packs and ordering pizza. Don’t get me wrong – beer and pizza are a winning combo, but what do you do when you have to turn things up a notch? Cut to now. A memorable party has become more than just having great food, plenty of hooch and a few party tricks. It’s about setting the mood and giving your guests an experience they will never forget. So what essentials do you need to make your soiree the hottest ticket in town? Here are six key ways to make sure your entertainment zone is up to the challenge of hosting the ultimate evening.

1. A bar
After you’ve grabbed a table at a pub, the bar is the place to which you gravitate. As soon as your guests arrive, you offer them a drink. Thus, if space and budgets permit, why not make this your ground zero.

Get inspired by this bar designed by Hyderabad-based Aamir and Hameeda Associates. They use rough textures and wood accents to create a contemporary open bar in this city apartment. To add a bit of colour and drama, old-fashioned suitcases in warm bright colours are displayed on open shelves behind the bar.

If space constraints don’t allow you to have a full-on bar counter, why not build a compact display to show off your favourite tipples? Back-lit to highlight the bottles, this mini bar is as narrow as a closet, yet houses a wide selection of drinks, a cocktail kit and a shelf to create all your spirituous concoctions.

2. A home theatre, a pool table
With great TV shows on air and Netflix, it’s common to host a get-together on match night, or a season premiere or finale. If this is a common occurrence for you, then investing in a home theatre system will really kick your party into high gear. Make sure your screen inches are ample and the decibel strength of the gadgets is good.

If you’re not keen on a home theatre system, then you might like a game with the guys – set up an Xbox counter or a pool table, a dartboard, a card table or some board games.

3. Mood lighting
A big part of entertaining right is setting the right mood for your guests. Lighting is crucial here. Too dark and it’s an unpleasant dungeon look. Too bright and it’s just not relaxing enough. Consider options in LED and different kinds of dim mood lighting.
4. Plenty of seating
It’s great that you’ve brought the cinema experience home with your home theatre system. You even have seats that vibrate in sync with the action up on the big screen. But the mark of a well-laid-out entertainment area is in creating different seating zones for those who don’t want to be part of the action. Make sure there is enough separate seating in the room for smaller groups to congregate and converse independently.

5. An outdoor entertainment spot
If you have lots of outdoor space, then shade a portion of it to create your very own party spot. This home takes advantage of its extensive outdoor area to create a compact outdoor living experience – complete with a kitchen, dining area, bar, fridge and seating. Imagine enjoying an outdoor BBQ with ice-cold margaritas to beat the summer heat.

6. A bit of your personality
Most people forget to incorporate an important element into their spaces – a bit of themselves. Reflecting the homeowner’s fondness for entertaining, New Delhi-based Group DCA tailor-made the screen in this picture from recycled beer and whiskey bottles to create a little whimsy, emphasising the bar area.
