5 Patterns That Will Make You Go OMG
Mixed to bold effect, these spaces show the unabashed use of patterns that look cool, dramatic and edgy
A smartly placed pattern – on furnishings, walls, flooring or furniture – can make all the difference in a room. Here we look at five top designs that have the ability to influence not just the look but even the ambience of a space. If there are other patterns you’re crazy about, let us know about them in the Comments section below.
Houndstooth
This pattern has a very contemporary appeal and adds a subtle sense of style and sophistication to a space. The houndstooth upholstered armchairs give momentum to this living room sporting solid colours in the leather sofa, the neutral flooring and grey walls.
In the second image, a houndstooth mosaic tile backsplash peeks out from the kitchen and provides dynamic visual impact in the predominantly woody space.

Suzani
I am personally sold out on this pattern – it is a bold and unusual design and imparts an exotic feel to the room. The fiery red bedroom allows the pattern to take prominence. Solid red and brown (and of course the white brick walls) provide a nice base for the circular suzani discs and to make a statement. There’s also something cosy and comforting about this design – it has an ethnic touch to it and reminds me of Indian prints and patterns.
Suzani leaps to the eye in this entire room’s fabric palette, too, providing contrast to the otherwise soft scheme. If I were lucky enough to get hold of such treasure, I’d start with the bold suzani-upholstered chair and then arrange the room around it, picking the rug, drapes, and sofa fabrics to go with its rich appeal.

Ikat
Imagine the bathroom above without the wallpaper, with just the chandelier and fancy mirror – it would look sophisticated but without any character. The Ikat wallpaper brings just the right dose of colour, pattern, texture and uniqueness to the space. I can image the owners extending bathroom time just so they can revel in this lovely space.
To have such a pretty window seat like the one on the left would be anyone’s dream. The space is ornamented with ikat seating, contrasted with printed cushions and highlighted with a dainty pendant. Also, notice how the coral hue is repeated in the trim of the curtains.

Geometric
Here is a a pattern-heavy living room where the focal points are the flooring and the artwork. Use of bold shapes and colours make the interior look lively and energetic. To ensure that the space doesn’t seem too overwhelming, neutral accessories and seating are chosen.
The geometric design running along the entire length of the staircase on the left lends drama to the area. I also like this continuous pattern – almost makes it look like a seamless, unbroken 3D design that flows down the entire stairway and the flooring beyond.

You know it as well as I do – there’s something so charming and happy about polka dots, wherever they’re used – be it clothing or interiors. The bedroom above shows the use of this pattern in two different ways – on furnishing and artwork. The white dots on the bright pink rug create a harmonious symmetry, while the closely set random vibrant ones on the painting give ample character and layering to the room.
You probably can’t get a bolder pattern than the huge, in-your-face polka dots seen on the wallpaper in the left image. I like how the pink pillow mirrors the polka design, though on a smaller surface. Since the walls are so bold and dominating, the rest of the furnishings are kept white. Who wouldn’t love to camp here?
