4 Mumbai Homes Exemplify the 'Less is More' Mantra
These residences in maximum city show there is substance in simplicity
‘Less is more’ or minimalist interior design isn’t all about cool-white-and-pale-wood schemes, stark looks or ultra-modern spaces. The idea behind minimalism is to merge form with function in an aesthetic manner; it simultaneously showcases exceptional functional design while artistically creating a simplified way to live. These residences in Mumbai are prime examples of minimalism done right with oodles of style and panache.
The entire colour palette is muted, magnified by swathes of natural light pouring in from wide windows. The furniture is minimal in number and form while the design aspect is reflected in the ’80s-style exposed electrical conduits. Pale geometric flooring unites the whole space, keeping the look seamless.
The bedroom is entirely tiled in neutral Kota stone and sports vintage pieces of furniture – a combination that perfectly meets the ‘design meets function’ vibe that permeates the home.

The dining room furniture is made of natural wood and metal, whose colour and symmetrical lines complement the bookcase lining the background. Even the painting is unfussy and reflects the same neutral hues, enhancing the serene and balanced environment.
In the master bedroom, the simplicity of light-grained shuttered wardrobes and the leather-and-marble-clad headboard allows the focus to remain on the room’s purpose and function, without taking away from the underlying beauty of the carefully selected furnishings.

Compact furniture that blends into the wall, fanlights that are noteworthy of design yet subtle in look, create an atmosphere of airiness and freedom – even in a small space.
The bathroom sticks to an all-white scheme; almost invisible cabinets and subtle lighting add to the whole minimalist look.

Earthy colours, natural materials and organic fabrics lend to the sleek, pared-down aesthetic while accentuating the aspects of architecture and form simultaneously. The only embellishments and colour come via well-chosen tropical plants.
The master bedroom upstairs is all wood and glass, while dark wood flooring unites the indoors to the outdoors smoothly. There are no partitions between the bedroom, the storage area and the bathroom except for glass doors, and the only embellishments are in the form of the television indoors and plants on the terrace.
