I'm wondering how far the sink is from the wall in #3. The National Kitchen & Bath Assoc. recommends at least 18" on one side & 24" on the other. I'm also wondering if the people who live there are all really short. The contractor mentions a 'full 10" overhang for seating' & for a 36" counter the recommendation is at least 15".

Or it may be the contractor only had X amount of inches, so he utilized priority of fitting the sink and seating x amount of people in x amount of counter space that also has x amount of storage (on the side we cannot see). If the contractor extended the seating side counter, it may have intruded too much into the walking area to that patio door considering it is a swing type. Besides, a 10" overhang for some counter stools is not uncommon, despite the NKBA which is just gives a "recommendation", not an absolute.

Celestina: It's true that he had to prioritize, but when he says 'a full 10"', it makes it sound like that is a good amount. And 10" is not enough to sit comfortably at a counter unless you are about 3-4 feet tall or like to sit sideways. If the counter is just for serving, it's great. NKBA's recommendation is for good ergonomics.
