Nature offers us sustainable, durable and workable materials, such as wood, stone, earth (mud and clay), straw, oxides and so on, in plenty. These materials have a definite edge over engineered materials not only because of their eco-friendly character but also because they induce wellness by having a calming, comforting effect on the surroundings. They are available locally and are versatile. They can improve the efficiency of homes in terms of energy and cost, and they provide a unique aesthetic to the interiors.

Check out these homes by Indian design firms Group DCA, Wright Inspires and Uncut Design Lab, where they have worked in earthy building materials and finishes.

1. Designer: Group DCA
Location: New Delhi

To style spaces that would appeal to three generations of a family alike was a tricky job for the designers. They unified the interior scheme by opting for natural materials and finishes, such as Andhra stone (limestone) on the floor (of the living room, dining area, kitchen and bathrooms), dark wood floor planks (for the bedrooms), exposed clay brick surfaces on the walls and kitchen backsplash, oak-wood planks on ceilings, wooden details on doors and cupboard shutters, carved and sandblasted wood for decoration and wooden furniture.

This home is a great lesson on how organic textures can complement contemporary elements in a modern setting. Notice how a unique live edge wood dining table is juxtaposed with the modern chairs in the picture above.

Wondering how to accent your home with live edge wood?
Group DCA
In this bedroom, the exposed brick wall is painted a cool grey to supplement the contemporary look without losing its own presence.

Location: Bangalore

The designers flooded the interiors of this home with native natural materials, with undeniably environment-friendly results.

Some distinct components include exposed terracotta blocks on the walls, Kota and Jaisalmer stone on the floors, pink Magadi stone cladding on walls, and wood accents on the partition walls, doors, furniture and staircase treads.

It is worth mentioning that recycled wood is employed throughout the house and a half-vaulted, curved terracotta filler-slab roof crowns the top floor, reinforcing the sustainability aspect of the structure at large.

3. Designer: Uncut Design Lab
Location: Kanchipuram

Inspired by Chettinad houses of Tamil Nadu, the entrance of this home features a decorative wooden mugappu (gable), carved door trims, wooden details on the foyer ceiling and red oxide on the floor.

An intermediate space in the inner area of the foyer showcases a set of two dark wood columns over the red oxide-covered seats like in a thinnai (a shaded verandah with raised platforms for sitting), typical to traditional Chettinad architecture.

While laterite stone wall cladding invites depth and an extra layer of tactility to the living and dining areas, Athangudi tiles bring vibrancy and a punch of colour to the dining room, kitchen and bedrooms of this home.

The yellow and turquoise tiles with flower motifs ooze an antique charm, adding to the ethnic vibe. Wooden furniture and cabinetry befriend other materials to achieve a straightforward, honest appeal.
