14 Beautiful Living Rooms on Houzz India
Earthy, posh, traditional or contemporary — these gorgeous rooms are as diverse in style as the country itself
A living room can reveal who you are in the most telling of ways. Here are 14 spaces that represent the changing face of urban India.
2. Touch of history
The pieces of fabrics in those frames on the wall, the wooden figurines on the side tables, the Greek bust on the coffee table – these antique pieces lend a certain gravitas to this living room. The coffee table and the rug add to its old-world charm.

3. A visual delight
This long room starts with a sitting area under a single-level ceiling that merges with an atrium-like space. Adding to the unconventional layout is the raised platform with a Japanese-style tea table.
With ample natural light coming in from the glass windows, Fadd Studio have kept the lighting limited to a few recessed lights and ambient light for the walls. The blues and the browns of the furniture offers delicious contrast.

4. Picture perfect
This quaint living room by Architecture BRIO enjoys the luxury of being close to the wilderness, which is pretty rare these days. I love the way the room has been created as if to especially present the view. The window frames the verdant scene outside, like a vast living painting.
The masterpiece is the set of full-length folding glass doors that also work as a wall. Folded back, they expand the room’s space; drawn shut, they contract it – keeping the view close at all times.

5. The balancing act
Lack of space doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to compromise your decor. This living room shows that the key to designing a space is picking the right furniture.
This tiny but succinct space uses compact and well chosen pieces in shades that find affinity with the surrounding walls. Aamir and Hameeda Associates introduces colour and prints through the soft furnishings and works of art.

6. No vertical limit
In this double-height living room of a duplex apartment, another Aamir and Hameeda Associates design, the abundance of vertical space been has been tackled by using metal beams, a faux textured wall and a cluster of pendant lights. The space doesn’t look empty but at the same time, it doesn’t look too busy. A different floor treatment demarcates the living area. The blue rug and a few matching accent cushions echo the broad stroke of blue overhead, suggesting the colour of the sky outside.

7. Traditional with a twist
How to create a fresh, modern look while still retaining a bit of attractive traditional style? Sak Designs have achieved this by bringing together pieces of different styles, which are bound together by prevailing whites and the strategic use of spots of bright colour.
No two tables are the same: the rather retro triangular coffee table has subtly convex edges, while the side table looks like three round Colonial peg tables fused together. The third is a log. The sofa is flanked by a lamp and a fan, but both are contemporary pieces. And the rounded wooden armchairs contrast with the straight lines of the sofa. But it all works!

8. A look at the future
This all-white futuristic living room is an amalgamation of different shapes. The sofa made up of a series of oddly shaped units, the curved coffee table, the long, arching floor lamp and even the wall clock – KNS Architects Pvt Ltd have assembled unique contrasting pieces and shapes and made them work in this room. Texture is added to the space through the furry throw and the rug. This room shows that if you want to go for one colour scheme, you need to play with shapes and texture. And instead of recessed lights, pendants have been used – cherry on the cake!

9. A view to remember
Here the indoors extend outwards to a sprawling garden. This uniquely designed space by Hiren Patel Architects doesn’t have as many walls as most rooms do but we aren’t complaining because it is all about the view. The setup has been kept elegant and low-key with neutral-coloured furniture to create a relaxed vibe. The wooden beams in the ceiling resonate with the green of the grass and the brown of the furniture and the trees, bringing in a certain warmth to this space.

10. Curation done right
Décor is as much about the personal touch as it is about aesthetics. This living room by Group DCA covers two rooms and includes a collection of artefacts and other accessories that the family have picked during their travels.
While the space includes a variety of furniture and accessories, the underlying theme that joins these together is that they reflect the owner’s personality. Most of the furniture pieces are made of reclaimed wood and are hand-crafted. The grey armchair placed right at the opening between the rooms bridges the boundary between the rooms.

11. Of hues and motifs
The white Chesterfield sofa and grey walls of this living room of an English-style home by Fadd Studio provide a breather from all the typical colours and prints usually used. The furniture, the pastels and the art – every element in this room seems to have a mind of its own, yet everything comes together harmoniously.

12. Follow the light
There is no doubt that the star attraction of this living room is its ceiling. The square faux ceiling with the brass pendant lamp sets a traditional tone in this room by Dipen Gada and Associates. The kitsch patterns on the cushions bring out the colours in the hanging lamp, and the little pops of red contrast with the blues in the ceiling. While the colours take the centre stage, monochromatic pictures on the wall were picked to amplify the bursts of brighter shades.

13. Posh and bold
This living room designed by Urbanist shows how dark colours can be brought into a living space in just the right way. The black and grey of the sofa are balanced by a wooden backdrop. The golden-yellow armchair with the muted mauve quilted table punctuate the overall darker tone and provide a respite from it. It’s the colours and the luxurious fabrics that give this room a plush look.

14. Wood meets concrete
The unique interplay between wood and concrete makes this living room by Architecture Paradigm spectacular. The coolness of concrete is offset by the warmth of the wood; the rough surface texture of the concrete wall brings contrast to the smooth finish of the stairs. See how instead of ending at the bottom landing, the wooden surface flows sideways and integrates with the sofa in the room. And the wall covered by greenery forms the perfect finishing touch for this room.

The beauty of pastel is displayed in its full glory in this charming living room by Moriq Interiors. Here, multiple colours work wonderfully together. The monochromatic wallpaper creates a perfect backdrop to the riot of colours in the foreground. The white ceiling with focus lights and the pale wood floor highlight what’s in between. My favourite pieces here are the baby-pink jhoolas and the clustered box lights.
