12 Surprising Ways to Use Stained Glass in Your Home
Discover the unconventional ways in which you can light up your home with stained glass
Churches are what come to mind when I think of stained glass – though, over the years, this element has made its way quietly into the various corners of our homes, too. It is no longer just an embellishment for a standard window or door; stained glass is being fitted into the most unexpected places. Let’s walk through these houses and see where.
The welcoming door
If I had a front door like this one, I wouldn’t burden myself detailing every corner of the house. This is a statement piece. It gives so much warmth as you enter. The vibrant colours on a backdrop of white let abundant light come in. I could spend hours staring at the delicately patterned oranges and reds in this door. So much to fancy in a simple stained-glass design. Sigh!

The dressy divider
Here, the formal living room and the dining room are separated by a custom glass divider giving the space an old-world look and providing much-needed privacy. It is a fascinating piece – a softer and eclectic take on the warehouse sliding door.

The aquatic nursery
While the baby bedroom remains the most playful space in the house, we seldom think beyond the thematic decor or cute cuddlies to accentuate the room. The stained-glass door with aquatic flora and fauna on it adds a dash of the unexpected.

The ceiling full of the sky
The coloured glass skylight instantly uplifts the beauty of the hallway, adding light and style. Stained-glass drop-down ceilings can be a great way to illuminate and open up darker and closed spots of the home.

The light fixture
Now, if you’re the kind that wants to make a style statement, you won’t mind going the extra mile to bring a mammoth light fixture like this one into your home. It spans the length of the entire dining table; the warm tones of the colours blend well with the earthiness of the wood. In case this one’s size is a bit much, consider stained-glass orbs or pendant lamps.

The cabinet
Replacing the old, transparent panes in cabinet shutters with stained-glass ones, combined with recessed lights inside, transforms this corner. Stained glass in cabinets gives the illusion of transparency but its patterns can cleverly hide the clutter within.

The earthy shower
This kind of glass brings out the best in light, be it natural or artificial. The dark wood door and the warm beige tiles, against the greens and the yellows of the stained glass, give this walk-in shower a Mediterranean feel. Very exotic.

We cannot help but admire the way a regular gate has been given a different garb. While blending with the greens around it, the stained-glass effect still makes it stand out. The Archiverde Landscape Architecture team found this one at an architectural salvage shop and then had the fence contractor transform it into a beautiful gate.
