Sprawled across the living room, angled to form a nook, curved gracefully in a sociable circle – they can be shaped to fit your idea of a seating arrangement. Sectional sofas comprise multiple independent pieces that can fit neatly into a corner and also demarcate boundaries in larger spaces. Contemporary variations come in ‘L’, ‘U’ and even round and curved shapes. One can always add an ottoman or chaise to the setup for more comfort and flexibility. Here are eleven sectional sofas that will inspire you to reconsider your home seating.
Abrams Valenti Interiors
1. Upholstered in refreshing white and green, this is a left arm facing sofa, which refers to the arm placement when looking at it head-on (not when sitting on it). This sofa redefines the seating area, adding a bit of cosiness to the expansive drawing room. Bringing in the hues of nature, the leaf-print upholstery, green carpet and textured cushions create a harmonious colour scheme.

Tip: The arm placement is important, as you will fit together two or more pieces and will want the arms in the right place, not sticking out in the middle.

2. See how the sectionals have been put together to create two separate seating configurations. This not only increases the number of people it can accommodate but also adds a sense of layering in a linear room.

Colourful pillows give a burst of vibrancy to the charcoal upholstery, as do the red pouffes and orange accent chair.

3. Playing with bright accents, this sectional sofa mixes up colours to create visual interest. There are no separate armchairs here and the contrast of hues and patterns help define the seating. It also softens the look of this wide U-shaped sofa without making it seem too blocky.

4. A traditional linear sofa and a corner chaise are combined into one modular arrangement. The muted red sectional sofa sings of lounging and relaxation, transforming this living room into an inviting and energised space.

5. This small sectional sofa includes a cushioned curved back and a meshed headboard, which makes it a one-of-a-kind piece – part traditional, part contemporary. The combination of grey with turquoise, yellow and red in the upholstery and accents give it a quirky vibe.

6. This curved sectional sofa features rich brown leather upholstery that exudes opulence. Shaped like a horseshoe, the sofa has a Lawson-style back – separate large, soft cushions – for comfort, with an adjoined cocktail ottoman right in the middle of the setup.

7. U-shaped sofas like this can convert your living space into a super-comfortable lounge. With this configuration, you get two chaise areas for stretching out and there’s a cushy connector sofa piece sandwiched in between. If, like here, the sofa faces the television – it’s an immersive theatre experience all the way!

8. This sectional sofa fits right against the perpendicular walls to give the living area a streamlined look. Carpeting the area is a clever idea as it reinforces the niche the sectional is making and demarcates the seating zone.

9. The classic L-shaped sectional sofa separates the seating area from the dining space. Along with track arms, it has console armrests in yellow and black. The subtle sheen of the upholstery brings a gentle touch of glamor.

10. Here, the designer takes the sectional outdoors. Lined up right against the balustrade, the sofa makes use of every inch of the outdoor space – and the view too. Having weatherproof upholstery is an added boon on rainy days.

11. This sectional blends the window spot into the seating arrangement to maximise space. This is great for tight corners. Facing the book-shelf and with lots of natural light, it’s the perfect spot to read and unwind.
