Courtyards, no matter the size, provide modern homes with a breath of fresh air (literally) and a much-needed sense of serenity. They are our very own personalised nature retreats that permeate our homes through the blurred boundaries of glass ceilings, retractable doors and French windows. To discover the different ways these have been implemented, we have picked out a selection of homes from all over India, which reflect a contemporary take on the traditional courtyard house.

A barsati in South Delhi succeeds admirably in channelling old-world courtyard vibes, with its open-to-sky centre space sandwiched between the living room and bedroom. Full-length glass accordion doors give the entire home a sense of space and seamlessness.

This central court does all that a courtyard is supposed to – it lets in bright sunlight and fresh air, and lets out the hot air from the home. A solitary frangipani takes pride of place, with a red brick wall acting as a foil to its living green. White niches in this wall, featuring cut-work metal panels, bring a decorative element to the rustic setting.

A courtyard in the true sense of the word, this imposing double-height space is slap-bang in the centre of the home, flanked by the living room on one side and the dining room on the other, while rooms above have a ringside view of the action below.
Green spots and easy seating make it an ideal spot for entertaining or just relaxing.

Making a display case of its courtyard is this home situated within a plotted development. A stone-and-grass pathway connects the yard to the different spaces around it. The patch of green, boasting a tree, is a sight for sore eyes, while the natural rocks add a strong architectural effect.

The change in the level of the floors is the only differentiating factor between the kitchen and the sunken courtyard. The absence of any sense of partition between the two spaces gives the impression of a single, vast open room, though the tree growing out of the deck is a bit of a giveaway.

A triple-storeyed house in the capital city revolves around a central yard dressed up in pebbles, a weathered urn and a majestic mural. Living quarters on the upper floors have windows opening into the courtyard, allowing residents to take advantage of natural light as well the beauty of the Madhubani painting that goes all the way up the wall.
