Great questions! I wish I had these 8 months ago. I've fired one contractor that was scheduled to do patio and linear fireplace. I had worked with them before and they used to be awesome. Not anymore. Never hire someone that doesn't share your vision for your yard in the beginning!

Hi zphe,

It depends on your contract with them. Most designers will be happy just to do a plan with/for you and leave it with you for you to implement it at your own pace. Discuss this option with them when you first meet with them.

Hi Phil1564

I think that this is such an important statement that you have made. Yes it is important to share the vision. But what is the vision?

What are the exact products/Materials and are they available? Are you then buying these materials or is the installer buying them? Also a contractor/installer is not by definition a designer. Usually a contractor is just following a plan and that plan needs to either be well thought out and drawn out, or paid for.

Lots of builders get in over their heads trying to be all things, and that is an important lesson for us all.
