Everyone’s home is their castle … or palace, but some are literally more palatial than others. The homes featured here may not be actual palaces but are stately enough for modern-day kings and queens. While size is a major criterion (though we have a penthouse that is a meagre 260 square metres), these homes have what it takes to make the cut. Have a browse and come away inspired (and a tad jealous).

1. Where: Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh
Firm: I - Design Studios
Size: 743 square metres (8000 square feet)
Replete with larger-than-life luxury detailing, this lavish home in Lucknow harks back to bygone days of grandeur. It’s hard to decide which is the biggest showstopper element in this home.

Even the sprawling passageway on the first floor that connects the most-used areas of the house is no less spectacular, dressed as it is in black-and-white patterned marble floors, baroque banisters and a large but delicate chandelier.

2. Where: Gurgaon, Haryana
Firm: NIVASA
Size: 929 square metres (10,000 square feet)
The five-bedroom apartment in the posh Magnolias is characterised by an interplay of minimalism and maximalism. The living room is a study of style and sophistication marked by sumptuous seating, an ornate chandelier, full-length canopied windows on one end and a sweeping wood-framed bay window furnished with a ledge and bar stools, at the other.

The gold-accented bar at the end of the lounge balances the sombre tones of the rest of the room. A gold mesh adorns the façade of the counter, while gilded flutes on the wall make the corner come alive.

3. Where: Jaipur, Rajasthan
Firm: Shantanu Garg Design
Size: 1115 square metres (12,000 square feet)
This Jaipur home is unapologetically opulent in its mix of design styles with an underlying thread of tradition. The main living room is defined by a dull-gold and fuchsia palette. The sofas upholstered in richly-toned indigo and bronze velvet, and the geometrically patterned suede accent wall, imbue the room with an Art Deco feel.

The double-height dining room features a stunning antique-style dining table in ornate gilt set in cream-and-grey lacquer, and topped with an amazonite slab. Chesterfield-style chairs, in their minimalist upholstery, offset the richness of the table.

The mood of subtle extravagance can be seen in the imposing double doorway at the entrance, black-and-white marble floors and antique furniture scattered through the room. The formal living room seen here is all about understated luxury, with its grid-patterned marble floor, plush sofas and a high ceiling panelled in wood.

A wooden display unit separates the dining room from the living room. In the dining area, an oval ten-seater table sporting an ebony veneer top is teamed with chairs dressed in pink, while an eye-catching cluster of glass globes serves as the chandelier.

The enormous open-plan modular kitchen next to the staircase is minimalistic and done to perfection.

An expansive island takes centre stage; covered in the same marble as that of the floors, it seamlessly blends into the room while the powder-blue cabinetry adds a hint of colour. Above the island hang three wire-frame pendant lights.
