A pantry area to the right of the sink features a countertop cabinet for small appliances and other items. Pullouts below store dry goods. “We recommend having pullouts on the bottom, because it allows you to have access to what’s in the back of the cabinet,” Mee says. “Otherwise things get lost back there.”
Paneling and crown molding around the 36-inch counter-depth fridge give the appliance a built-in look. “Those kinds of details are possible because these cabinets are custom,” Mee says. An upper cabinet features dividers for sheet pans, but the homeowners also use it to store cooling racks, muffin tins, cookbooks and liquor bottles that are too tall to fit elsewhere.
Choose Your Countertop Material Wisely “Select materials such as Corian, quartz, steel or sintered stone [mineral and stone particles bound together with heat and pressure], which are nonporous, prevent stains and are easy to wipe clean,” Delaney says. “Solid-surface [countertops], such as Corian, are probably the most hygienic,” Whyte says. “They have a seamless finish and therefore don’t have grooves to trap dirt. This is why you see them used in hospitals and fast-food chains.”
10. Ensure That Floors Are Slip-Resistant Materials that don’t get slick reduce the chances of falling when there’s a spill. Floor tile should have enough grout and texture to grip your feet. Porcelain tile absorbs less moisture than ceramic tile or other flooring types; it’s also easy to maintain and clean. Vinyl flooring, seen here, can offer good slip resistance too, and it’s softer on your feet.
8. Pick Drawers, Not Doors The best part about drawers is that they display all your flatware and utensils at once, which allows for easy grabbing. You don’t have to get on your knees and peer into the back of the cabinet to see what’s available. You can also store your larger kitchen items in drawers. Drawers wider than 30 inches can stow plenty of pots and pans.
7. Make Corners Accessible Blind corner cabinets won’t cut it. Yes, they provide ample storage space, but too often they turn into unofficial junk bins when you tire of getting on all fours to fetch the dish you need. Performing that bend-reach-lift motion also isn’t good for aging backs. Look for corner cabinet bases that effectively eliminate the need for rummaging and reaching. They aren’t all the same, though. You have options, be it a convenient three-drawer base (left) or a traditional Lazy Susan.
Install a Pullout Pantry Because it lets you see everything at a glance without having to shuffle items around, homeowners of all ages will find a pullout pantry useful. But besides being convenient, drawers that give you easy access to your canned goods and cereal boxes also put less strain on your back and knees.

“This piece to the left of the banquette is a real workhorse,” Fowlkes says. It houses small appliances, which keeps the countertops across the room clear. Ferris outfitted it with LED strip lights, outlets, shelves, slats and pullout drawers.

Handmade tile shows little quirks and variations in texture, meaning that even something as simple as a white square tile, as used here on the backsplash in a kitchen by Hello Kitchen, can deliver a lot of personality.

Ultramatte Black Lacquer Homeowners’ request. “They wanted a black-and-walnut kitchen in their new-construction modern farmhouse home,” designer Tina Rodda says. “They also knew they wanted Dacor appliances in Graphite, including a 48-inch range and a 42-inch refrigerator.” Cabinet color. Some luxury vinyl tile is even groutable, for a real fool-the-eye tile look. This photo shows Karndean Designflooring’s Da Vinci tile in the Drift option, a 12-by-18-inch luxury vinyl tile that imitates limestone; strips can be added between tiles to mimic grouting, as seen here. Beveled edges provide an authentic stone effect.
The cabinet color has blue undertones. Mizrahi describes it as a charcoal navy. “This color adds a lot of dimension and is very compelling,” she says. “It transforms as the light changes during the day. Having two walls of windows adjacent and that big window over the sink allowed us to use this darker color.” The couple updated all the flooring in their home with engineered hardwood in variegated chestnut tones. “I love the wider planks of the floor,” Alexa says. “I initially wanted to do a chevron or other pattern there, but wanted a floor that would be special but not overwhelming. We tried to follow a budget, and Arielle found some on clearance because they were discontinuing the shade.”
Peel-and-stick wood panels with a matte charcoal finish wrap the custom range hood. A band of stained wood coordinates with the trim on the peninsula. “It was about character and texture,” Vilov says. “You have that full wall with no uppers, so we wanted [the hood] to be a focal point.”
The refined color and materials palette includes black enamel Shaker-style cabinets with touches of rustic wood on the peninsula back and range hood. “Black can be very heavy and feel weighted,” Vilov says. “We saw photos on Houzz and elsewhere with this kind of wood detail and thought it was a nice way to lighten up the room.” The walls are a coordinating light brown, warm beige color (Oyster Bar by Sherwin-Williams).
Because this is a retirement home, the homeowner designed the kitchen with accessibility in mind. The lower cabinets in the back run are primarily drawers, and those with doors have pullouts.
