Adjectives like grand, royal and larger-than-life find limited usage when looking at city homes – this exception stands out as a unique and spell-binding one, reminiscent of a modern-day palace. “The brief for the home was very clear, and it was a single-line one: a rich, luxurious and extremely colourful mini-palace. So, we embellished the home with semi-precious elements, such as mother-of-pearl, malachite and onyx detailing, Venetian mirrors and gold and silver leafing work. All these intricate elements helped give life to a palatial interior fit for a king,” Adetee Sawhaney of Altus - Luxury Living says.

As you enter, a centre table in the foyer with silver-leaf work and a Venetian cut-work mirror base grabs attention. “Everything in this home is designed like a piece of art – be it this table, the crystal chandelier that hangs above or the Persian printed wallpaper in maroon on the ceiling. Since the flooring was light, we decided to accentuate the home with colours,” Sawhaney says.

The living room is on the right of the lobby, an expansive space with large windows that look out to the verdant outdoors, filling the room with light and allowing the metallic details to glisten. The space is divided into three seating areas, with larger-than-life pieces. This room has a light-toned wallpaper “because we didn’t want to take away from the vibrant furniture. The centre table is a massive 6 x 6 foot one, made of Venetian mirrors – it creates a huge impact when you enter the living room. It is inlaid with semi-precious stones. The sofas in mirror work also show silver embroidery on them,” Sawhaney says. A beautiful Kashmiri carpet ornaments the ceiling, highlighting the opulent chandelier hanging from it. The gold-and-pink artwork on the right has been designed by Sawhaney, and is printed on canvas. All the works of art were specially customised for this house.
The other seating area brings a more laid-back, calming appeal with the low seaters. A baby-pink chaise longue occupies the corner and a mirror-work console stands along a wall nearby. “The room makes ample usage of chenille and velvet fabrics,” Sawhaney says.

The dining room, on the left of the lobby, overlooks the swimming pool and is filled with shades of pink. Grand high-backed chairs, a row of chandeliers, vivid wallpaper and detailing in gold and silver make up the design details of the room. “The wallpaper is a fabric-finished one, which runs from the wall to the ceiling, encasing the whole room. The dining table is special to us because of the way it was painstakingly made, studded with ivory stone, gold and mirror inserts. A cluster of crystal lights above the dining table further creates drama,” Sawhaney says.

“Since the owner is a man of refined taste, he wanted his seating to show opulence, too,” Sawhaney says. So, two special ivory-hued chairs at the head and foot of the table have gold figurines of winged beasts as finials on the armrests. The embroidered back of his throne-like chair further differentiates it from the remaining rani-pink seats.

The sideboard or buffet server gleams with a white-and-gold mirror surface that has Mughal motifs etched on it. Dainty gold accessories like the lamp, mirror and small boxes adorn the top, complementing the shimmering scheme.
A lounge area is adjacent to the dining space, overlooking the pool. It rides on a black, gold and lime theme. This is a place for private socials. “The wall is finished in neoclassical wallpaper and the windows are highlighted with gold cut-work mirrors. The table shows inlay work,” Sawhaney says.
The ground floor also houses the guest bedroom. “Every room has its own colour palette – this one sports a burnt orange, lifting the look and feel of the room. The bed has crystal cut-work on it and is enhanced with extremely rich detailing. All the bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms. The colours and materials define the richness and uniqueness of each room,” Sawhaney says.
The double-height area along the staircase is enhanced with a sparkling light installation of mercurised copper chandeliers. It makes for a dramatic addition along the stairway, which gets another dose of luxuriousness with the floor-to-ceiling windows. “On the landing area is a lobby highlighted with two identical black chaises. A cluster of tables studded with semi-precious stones is kept in front of the seating,” Sawhaney says.
The master bedroom has a signature blue, ivory and silver theme, with an opulent Venetian bed enhanced with an intricate headboard, created especially for the owner. “There is a lovely white fur rug here; the colour scheme is broken with a burnt-orange chaise on the side,” Sawhaney says.
Like all the other rooms, the daughter’s bedroom, too, is dipped in luxury and a bright colour scheme. “We picked a pink palette and gave the bed nice detailing with hand-etched mirror work and pink chenille fabric,” Sawhaney says. A pink trunk at the foot of the bed, matching the headboard, stores toys.
