Arches are age-old; one can find them in buildings dating back to the 3500 BC, reaching their ‘true’ rounded shape around 2500 BC, and later used widely by the ancient Romans. Over time, these curved elements found their way into various constructs like ceilings, doorways, partitions, niches, windows and more. This goes a long way in bestowing a unique character to the spaces. Be it a semicircular one or an ogee, a Mughal or a Tudor – when used strategically, an arch has the power to soften and perk up any space.
Are you looking for some arch inspiration? Here are eight homes that let arches create tasteful high points in the decor. Some stand as the focus of the room, some add to the organic look and some create a perfect backdrop. Get ready to savour them.

1. The White Room designed this unconventional house for a young couple in Mumbai. Almost Gaudi-like, arches, vaults and curves are integral design elements of this distinctively made home. The dining bar, doorways, windows, niches, all are crowned by asymmetrical round arch segments, reinforcing the organic appeal of different spaces. The whitewashed walls enhance the beauty of adjacent materials, the furniture and the flowing curves uncovered with every step inside the home.
2. In this Ahmedabad home, the inside-outside boundary is blurred by the windows big and small, the doorways and the openings, which are augmented by arches. KSUP STUDIO used local materials – pigmented lime plaster, pigmented cement floor and China mosaic to create a cosy, yet airy home where the arched openings soften the decor and bring in a traditional ambience.
3. Praxis appointed a jack-arch roof over this bedroom to accentuate the minimalist decor. I love how the straight and curved lines beautifully come together in one space. This Bengaluru home showcases a seamless blend of raw exposed brickwork, hand-plastered walls, stone flooring and dark-framed modern windows and wooden furniture.

4. Yes, you can have a modern bathroom along with a traditional arched window! This contemporary Hyderabad bungalow by Aamir and Hameeda Associates features stained-glass patterns on its arched window that dims the fury of the sun in the most pleasant of ways.
The architects have used a segmental arch (an arch with a circular arc of less than 180 degrees) and a three-centred arch (an arch made from arcs of three circles) over the windows (and doors in the bedroom, living and audio room, though unseen in the image).

5. An arched transition spot creates a more characterful space than its rectangular equivalent. In this Kerala home, the semi-circular arch visually frames the stair room at the back. LIJO.RENY.architects fashions contrasting levels of lighting in the two spaces to make the edge of the arch more prominent.
6. Shantanu Garg Design has introduced classical punches in this modern home through arches. In the lounge area, the leather-upholstered arched panel with rose-gold profiling adds to the eclectic decor. This not only gives the window a new ogee-arched enclosure but also adds an old-world charm to the space.
In the bedroom, arched panels over the bed and window recess work together with modern finishes to create a dramatic scene reminiscent of a bygone era.

7. One can witness arches used in different forms in this eclectic Mumbai home – in wall accessories, niches, internal windows and doorways.
In this bedroom, the stone-framed arches are an archaic addition, contrasting with the light-coloured surfaces around it. The Orange Lane uses little things to encase an individualistic decor, in an ode to Indian aesthetics and art.

8. The exteriors of this Delhi home are embellished with arches with decorative details. The use of white on all the wall surfaces keeps the focus on the curved elements, giving the arches a pristine, other-worldly aura. The addition of wall sconces and patterned screens in the triple archway creates an emotive transition from the indoors to the outdoors.
Some parts of the interior also exhibit Mughal-inspired arches over doorways and niches. For instance, in this bathroom, where light surfaces combine with modern furnishings to define the Asian-style interiors.
