A guest room should be more than just a space that accommodates your guests. It should be a comfort zone for your visitors where they can feel at home during their stay with you. Take a look at our checklist that’ll help you make your guest feel snug as a bug in a rug.
1. A decluttered, clean space
This, to my mind, is the first essential for creating an inviting and comfortable space – making sure clutter is at bay. Before your guests arrive, undertake an intensive vacuuming and dusting session and make sure the room is clean. Remember to take all your belongings out of the room so you don’t need to keep going back in and disturbing the guests.

2. Place luggage racks
It can be irksome for your guests to stoop or sit on the floor every time they have to get something out of their suitcase. Also, it’s not the most hygienic proceeding to use the bed to put luggage pieces that have travelled to airports and railway stations. For that reason, luggage racks were one of the first few things I bought for my guest room.

Tip: You can also consider providing stools, benches or an ottoman to serve the same purpose.
3. Clear out storage space
If the guest room isn’t used for a long time, sometimes we start using the extra space available for our off-season storage. When you’re preparing for guests, ensure that they won’t have to live out of a suitcase – even if you’ve put out a nice luggage rack. Empty out the closet, or at least a section of it, to make space available for hanging their clothes. Remember to stock the closet with sturdy hangers and to clear out a couple of drawers, as well.

4. Bring in a comfortable bed
The biggest essential for any bedroom is a good bed. Choose a spacious one but go with the size of your guest room. Invest in a high-quality mattress, even if it means shelling out a few extra bucks. After all, a cosy bed is the most basic requirement of a guest room and a way to help your guest feel comfortable and rested.
Make sure to the bed looks appealing. Choose crisp, ironed sheets, piled up with soft, medium and firm pillows, and add a warm quilt or a coverlet, depending on the weather. Toss in a few cushions to make it look inviting. These are also a great way to add colour to the room.

Tip: Keep a small basket by the bed to toss out the extra pillows and cushions at night and leave an extra blanket in it, in case your guests get chilly.

5. Place a cart of goodies
Pamper your guests and bring another level of luxury to the guest room by stacking a cart with knick-knacks your visitors might need during their stay. Water bottles, a basket filled with bathroom essentials, a box of chocolates or packets of nibbly bits for midnight hunger pangs, a fragrant moisturiser, perhaps even foot slip ons to be used around the house … You’ll be remembered as the host par excellence.
