Quirky space
Quirky spaces are the ones we notice, because they surprise and delight us. Space is the medium of architecture. Space defined, limited and shaped makes architecture. We feel its presence as we move through a building or landscape, and this is often by design. The shaping of space may be conscious or intuitive, pragmatic or inspired, but the dynamics have long been recognized and employed. Architecture is not sculpture. When architects design buildings as if they were abstract sculptures notice the users and their interests are subordinate to the architects' "expression." Quirky space does not trivialize us, but enhances our experience. It is responsive to our needs, engaging, and compelling. Here are some examples.
