Caroline McCredie Cross St 6.2K Saves | 3 Questions Backsplash. A hexagonal-patterned backsplash can give a kitchen a utilitarian look, but the rhombic shapes also lend themselves to a look that creates a dappled effect when every alternate tile is a different shade of the same hue. Tubular daylighting devices (TDD) also reduce the number of fixtures you need in a room, thereby saving you electricity and money. Solatube International, which manufactures TDDs, also says that the tubes are time and cost efficient: A professional can install one in two hours, and they cost less than installing new windows or traditional skylights. Payback varies, but for an average cost of $500, you could see economic benefits in a few years, Eco-Structure magazine reports.

For the street..... A warm greeting. Glamorous touches needn’t remain behind closed doors. Mark your entry with classed-up house numbers. Store-bought letters that mount to your siding or porch columns can often be had for a pittance, and you may even be able to find some funky fonts in vintage shops.

1. Inlaid tile “rug.” There’s a lot to love in this French bistro-style kitchen, but one detail that really catches the eye is the graphic encaustic cement tile inlaid like a rug between the island and the cooking zone.
Backpainted glass is my favorite way to get a modern, glossy surface in the shower or bath, and the technique offers limitless color options. Conventional glass is painted on the back side, then adhered to a substrate with adhesives designed for mirror installations or mounted using top and bottom tracks. Glass gets the green check mark, as it's made of natural materials and is durable, long-lasting and easy to clean with nontoxic cleansers. A large glass panel is another uniform surface without joints, making maintenance minimal.

“They look pretty much identical to the natural products, but they’re more durable and don’t need sealing or any special treatment or maintenance. So you can now bring the warmth and texture of timber into the bathroom or shower recess,” Aesthetically, the large-format tiles yield a previously unattainable level of seamlessness. By almost eliminating grout lines, spaces appear larger and more streamlined. The overall effect creates a high-end feel.
Large-format pressed porcelain tiles have transformed the look of today’s kitchens and bathrooms. “Extra large, thin, light, strong, durable, versatile, eco-friendly and beautiful —technical pressed porcelain is the future of architectural surfaces,” Bird says. Aside from their game-changing size, these new-generation porcelain products come in myriad finishes, textures and colors. The printing technology used to “dress” these tiles with pattern and texture is now so advanced that in many cases, it’s hard to distinguish them from the real thing, whether that’s natural stone, wood, concrete or another material.

Amp up the drama with vertical stacking, diagonal, herringbone, chevron and zigzag layouts, which are coming into play on bathroom floors, walls and kitchen backsplashes. On a budget? These striking layouts allow you to create a fresh new statement with minimal outlay, Gilding says. “You can add even more impact by using a contrasting grout to highlight the unusual pattern,” she says.

There are two wood-burning stoves in the house. The owner brought this one from her previous house. “It’s French and was designed to be built into a false chimney breast. It produces a lot of heat, so it can deal with a bigger space,” Barclay says. “The owner likes the industrial look, so rather than having it concealed, she wanted it all on view, but she didn’t want kilns or other paraphernalia. The idea was to enjoy the house in the setting it’s in, and not focus on its furniture or fixtures.” The fireplace sits on a concrete plinth, which acts as a heat sink: The concrete absorbs the heat when the fireplace is on, and keeps the warmth going after the fire has gone out.
