Sometimes lush plants and landscaping aren’t enough to make a garden breathtaking. Just like interiors, gardens too needs accessories to add that stylised, distinctive look. Here are some quick inspirations to get you started.
Urns, pots and vases look great inside the home but they lend a decorative quality to the garden, too. Oversized pots of different sizes clustered together in a corner are my favourites.
In this picture, see how the textured urns complement the verdant landscape. Their darker, heavier presence pulls together the lighter, brighter colours of the shrubs.

Water has a calming and therapeutic effect on its surroundings. A water feature can lift the mood and look of a garden and create a sense of relaxation. From fountains, mini ponds and pools to even large water-filled bowls for birds … there are many different ways to introduce water into your garden. See how this raised pond makes a striking feature, surrounded by large boulders and thick greenery.
You could even consider a waterfall here. If your garden isn’t large enough, instead of installing a large contraption, consider a small unit that allows water to cascade down a narrow wall or over a few rocks. There are many prefabricated water features available in the market that take up very little square footage.

When styling your landscape, consider statues or sculptures of Buddha, Ganesha or carved figurines made in stone or terracotta to complement the landscaping.
You could choose a fountain, too – perhaps a statue with a water spout or the classic renaissance three-tiered fountain. A stone walkway can be laid around the fountain and chairs placed here for a quiet sitting area.

How about a themed niche in the garden? It could be a Japanese Zen garden or a quirky corner like the one in the image. Lots of potted plants, lamps, bird sculptures and pebbles can work as garden ornaments. You could cordon off a section in your garden and create a whimsical land replete with the above mentioned accessories.
A birdhouse installed next to a bed of flowers paints such a quaint picture. I like the way this piece has been brightened up with a little bit of sunshine yellow along with a gorgeous dragonfly stuck on it.

Tip: If you don’t have the budget for buying new garden accessories, how about giving old, salvaged pieces a new purpose? You could reuse old boots or large tyres and pot some plants in them. What about using a vintage wooden door you found at chor bazaar? Repaint it and place it in the middle of the greenery for a dreamy look.
Lighting is such an important feature for any space – it immediately lifts the mood. From candles, traditional handi lights, glowing flower pots and lanterns to spotlights around water features and recessed lighting along the garden path – there are many ways to illuminate this space. You could even give a glamorous touch to your garden by adding an ornate chandelier.
Tip: Choose LED bulbs or solar-powered lights. These are energy-efficient and have a warm glow that makes the garden look welcoming.

What is a garden without a swing or a hammock? Whether it’s an ornamental wooden jhoola suspended from a sturdy tree, a swinging metallic pod chair or a DIY hammock made from tough cotton fabric or nylon, these add lots of cheer to the garden area.
