A Cupertino designer shares how to set up your home to accommodate guests

Who: Roya Gerami of Craftsmen’s Guild
Where: Cupertino, California
In her own words: “Residential design is a very personal thing. We get to meet people with different backgrounds and needs and wants. It’s very individual, and that’s exciting for us.”
Many older houses weren’t designed for entertaining large groups, but you don’t necessarily need a new home to cater to guests. Roya Gerami, a designer at Craftsmen’s Guild in Cupertino, helps clients transform their existing spaces to avoid the often high costs associated with moving in the Bay Area. Adding on or reconfiguring unused space can make your home feel like new and provide plenty of room for hosting family and friends, she says.

All about family. Craftsmen’s Guild is a family business in the truest sense of the word. Gerami’s husband began working at the company as an architect, was soon joined by his twin brother and brother-in-law, and then became a partner. They now own the business, and their family is involved with all the different aspects. “We’ve always thought it would be nice to have a family business,” Gerami says. “We hope our children will join us and continue the same work.”
Clients come first. “The best part about our job is knowing we’re making an impact on the lives of our clients by providing a nice space that they can really be proud of,” Gerami says. “When I see that sparkle in my clients’ eyes, that’s worth a lot to me.” Gerami and her team work to create homes that fulfill their clients’ visions: “The most exciting part is when we’re finished and they get to see their vision come to life,” she says.
Want a space fit for entertaining without moving? Gerami’s tips below can help you get started.

1. Know Your Needs
When it comes to enhancing your home for entertaining, it’s important to think about the areas you already use the most, Gerami says.
A Los Gatos couple wanted to create a nice space for their little kids to play where they could easily watch over them. The family used their kitchen and family room often, so those were natural places to redesign. “They were really small, so we built an addition and opened up the entire space to fit the island and living room,” Gerami says. Now the parents can cook and chat with friends and still watch over their kids when they’re all in the open space seen here.

2. Freshen Up the Guest Room and Bath
Put your guests at ease by creating a comfortable, beautiful guest bedroom and bathroom. The Craftsmen’s Guild team helped an older Los Altos couple remodel their home so their grown-up children — who live in Los Angeles — can have a lovely place to stay when they come to visit.
“We reconfigured the guest bathroom to have two sinks and a larger shower, so when their kids came up, they had a nice space for themselves,” Gerami says. The team built a new master bathroom for the parents that includes a double sink, whirlpool tub and large shower.

3. Head Outdoors
It can be easy to overlook your outdoor space when you’re improving your entertainment areas, but undeveloped spots can come in handy even if they’re not inside.
“The family in this home was very social and party-oriented; they wanted to build something where they could enjoy the pool,” Gerami says of Morgan Hill clients. The team created an outdoor living space, seen here, where the homeowners can store wood and sit outside next to the fireplace, even when the weather turns chilly.
