Minimalistic or extravagantly carved, headboards are the focal point of your bed and provide an inviting backdrop. If they’re treated seriously, they can transform into an integral part of your bedroom decor without occupying too much precious space. See the many ways a headboard makes a statement for you.
1. A floating headboard
Defy the norm of headboards that are attached to the bed. Indicative of the name, floating boards remain a few inches above the floor and can double as wall decor, too. Contours The Design Company uses an upholstered rectangular pattern here, which provides a nice, comfy place to rest your head when reclining in bed to read or have your morning cuppa. Panelled with wood on three sides, the nude colour makes an interesting contrast to the darker surroundings.

2. The carved classic
There is something special about the elaborately carved wooden headboards reminiscent of bedrooms in palatial havelis, the grand Indian houses of the past. They may have lost favour in modern city homes due to lack of space and change in tastes but if your nostalgia for such things persists, you can have the next-best thing. The Ashleys brings in the feel of an elaborate four-poster with just two carved wooden posts. The smaller headboard with its typical dome silhouette in lacquered wood harks back to classic designs.

3. An apparent canopy
If going over the top is your style, then draw inspiration from this illusionary wooden canopy. This headboard by Design Cafe seems to have no boundaries and extends from the floor to the wall and ceiling space, and becomes the centre-piece of the bedroom. The intricate latticework right above the cushions embellishes the zone.

4. Patterned wingbacks
Patterns and coloured prints perk up an ordinary headboard and bring in drama. You can consider a classic damask or even floral or geometrical patterns. In this image, the designer opts for a wingback style for these twin beds, which feature slightly higher verticals and enveloping edges. Generally twin beds are seen in guest rooms. Up the decor by using a couple of pillow shams here. You can do what has been done here – contrast the matching damask one with another in a nude or pastel shade to add depth.

5. Wall-to-wall
The wall-to-wall design here draws inspiration from the idea of the floating headboard, but takes it to new lengths. As shown here, the designer uses a patterned leather backdrop that covers the breadth of the wall. It is finished with sleek wooden panelling and to increase the functional value. A mirror is installed on one side – without hindering the continuity of the extended headboard.

6. Tufted in whimsical hues
Tufting is used a lot in headboards but instead of going for neutrals, you can pep up the look with some colour. The upholstered panel here is in an exciting shade of purple frenzy. It features diamond-patterned tufts in velvet, which gives softness to the quirky room decor. The whimsical hues are well balanced with the contrasting whites.

7. Chic storage
Maximise storage with headboards that offer storage benefits without intruding on your bed space. The all-white headboard cum bedside unit has been fitted with spotlights and adjustable lamps. The actual board is made of upholstered fabric to ensure comfort while the adjoining units are made of wood.

8. Board of light
This technically advanced design takes headboards to a whole new level. The headboard, flowing up from the base of the bed, is flexible and has strategically placed in-built lights. So you can twist and turn its corners to angle the lights to suit yourself: more drama to a dramatic design. The self-embossed patterns on the white board add to the decor.

9. Softness and contrast
Padded headboards in contrasting hues can tie together the entire look of the room. This fun bedroom boasts a heart-shaped board in teal and violet. The velvet headboard provides extra head support and is in tune with the rest of the decor. Since the bed is shaped like an over-sized pouffe with no sharp edges, it is just right for a child’s bedroom.
