There was a time when you had to leave your bedroom and walk down a hallway to reach a shared bathroom. Now, having an attached bath to your bedroom is almost a given. Called an ‘ensuite’, this is an extension of the bedroom itself. It is a French term, meaning to ‘form a suite’ and in architectural speak, it stands for a unit made up of a bedroom and a bathroom.
The privacy, comfort and luxury we associate with ensuites today are the result of thousands of years of civil engineering and social change. Thanks to the invention of electricity, indoor plumbing, water pressure and so forth, the modern bathroom has moved from being just a functional space to a private haven of relaxation and luxury.
When it comes to homes, this stylish boutique hotel staple varies in size and features. Some ensuites are attached rooms that house all the bathroom essentials, while others aren’t necessarily contained by solid walls.
Most ensuites have a toilet, sink and shower, while others with more room can also feature a tub, vanity and even some extra closet space.
Having a glass encased bathroom is quite the trend these days. Other than style, privacy is also maintained through the use of blinds or frosted glass. The advantage of glass over a solid wall is that it allows the room to feel larger and lets in more natural light.
Given that you’re trying to fit a whole bathroom within a bedroom, a sliding door becomes a sleek option to provide closure for an ensuite bathroom, without cutting down too much on the volume.
Some ensuites don’t even come with doors. Here, a partition behind the headboard becomes the ideal room divider. This way the open-plan bedroom and bathroom stays spacious, yet maintain the privacy of each room.

If you opt for an open bathroom, contrasting floor materials are a great way to subtly demarcate the two spaces, yet keep it light and flowing. This ensuite has floor to ceiling tiles, perfectly carving out a splash-proof zone.
Redundant alcoves can be put to good use with an all-inclusive bath-in-bedroom. All you need is good indoor plumbing, waterproof surfaces and a creative imagination to create a stylish room within a room.
