Low-Profile Hardware When it comes to cabinet hardware, many in our design panel believe that less is more, preferring thin, low-profile handles and pulls. “We specify very few knobs these days,” says Maryland designer Jennifer Gilmer. “Thin handles and pulls are the most popular right now, especially ones that are routed into the door or drawer.” For this recently remodeled kitchen in Washington, D.C., Gilmer added edge pulls that are routed into the tops of the cabinets. “It’s a clean look that works well with contemporary or midcentury styles,” she says. “It also keeps the look of a kitchen simple and uncomplicated.”

Wood Features That Warm Up White Kitchens As we’ve continued to report, white cabinets aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. In fact, 43% of renovating homeowners will choose white cabinets, according to the 2019 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study. But that doesn’t mean the entire kitchen will become white on white on white. Warmth is key to any balanced design scheme, and the quickest way to provide that is with good old-fashioned wood. Many designers are introducing wood in kitchens with white cabinets to lessen the stark feel and add texture. “As a whole, people are looking to ‘warm up’ the white kitchen,” New Jersey designer Virginia Toledo of Toledo Geller says. “A white kitchen will always be tried and true but can lack personality. We are integrating wooden stained islands, butcher block and wooden backsplashes more and more.” In this New York kitchen, Toledo incorporated a butcher-block chopping station on casters and white oak wood boards on the island and sink wall.
Zinc. While stainless steel will leave you wiping up every fingerprint, zinc darkens over time, developing a gorgeous patina. It is also nonporous and bacteria-resistant and needs only a quick wipe-down to be cleaned.

Natural selection. The heart of this Dallas kitchen is the island-breakfast bar, which features rich materials and a double waterfall structure. The raised breakfast bar is made of warm walnut, while the island top is white marble with gray veining. Homeowner and builder Chris Dauwe covered the space beneath the breakfast bar in reclaimed wood, sourced from a barn in North Carolina. Using natural-looking materials helped Dauwe achieve his goal of “a contemporary home with an industrial twist,” he says.

My open shelves are everything I thought they would be and more. Our everyday items are easy to reach, and I love styling the shelves and changing out seasonal decor. For the floating shelves, we used sanded plywood with a pine edge and installed them on floating brackets. They opened up the space, making it feel much larger than it is.
High uppers. The standard placement for upper cabinets has long been 18 inches above the counter. Modern installations now often hang 21 to 24 inches above, or even much higher, to give the work surface below more of an open feel. This reduces the amount of cabinet space within easy reach but still allows for plenty of storage for less commonly used items.

Don't: Overstuff a small kitchen. Open shelving can be a godsend in a small space, making your room appear significantly larger than the actual square footage. Although it may be tempting to cram shelves full, overstuffed shelves defeat the space-enhancing effects. In a small space, you must be extra vigilant about editing the items on those shelves. Stick with one color (you can't go wrong with white) and pare back to only the essentials.

Specialty Ventilation Specialty units like this Broan E12000 Series fan are great options for small kitchens. Its European styling reveals just a slim 1½-inch lip. When the fan is on, this piece slides forward from the face of the upper cabinetry by about 6 inches. Want a seamless look? Continuing a band of stainless steel in the same width all along the bottom of the upper cabinetry would make the fan disappear.

This modern kitchen’s undercabinet range hood is nestled into the uppers above the range, which lets the design maintain a clean, uniform appearance.

רעיון נפלא! א Stow storage in the surface. This overhanging countertop is super clever. Not only does it create a seating space, but it contains three nifty drawers too. But it gets better — a simple partition creates storage for glasses above the built-in wine cooler.

Use floating shelves. This open look does not require any special custom corner pieces and makes a small kitchen look larger than it really is. The only drawback is dust — I recommend using pieces you use and wash all the time, and giving the shelves a dusting once a week. This sounds like a pain until you discover the magic of a duster with an extender, which will help you get the pesky dusting done in a under a minute without a step stool.

Angled Corner Cabinet לפינה שאנחנו רוצים לסגור במטבח A convenient option for large kitchens where deep corners will otherwise go unused. Pros: Fills a corner and faces into the room for ease of use. Makes better use of a deep cabinet that might otherwise contain hard-to-reach items. Con: Some space will be unused behind the microwave and behind other appliances or drawers. Construction considerations: Typically a corner cabinet is planned during construction and not easily added after. If your cabinet system or company provides corner cabinet options, the cost shouldn’t be much different than that of a standard cabinet.
Straight. If you would like to have additional casual seating in your kitchen, a straight banquette, especially along a bank of windows with a pretty view, is a great option. When to use: When a long, narrow space is available.
Faces aren’t all flat, though. Those that have a raised panel are generally made from milled wood that is pieced together with square or mitered (45-degree-angle) corners and a panel in the middle to create a finished face. Faces that have more linear details, like Shaker-style ones, are often assembled with square cuts and also have panels in the middle. The important thing to understand about doors and drawers is the limits of their stability and the dimensions of the wood. You can’t have a solid wood door manufactured from a single wood species unless it has been pieced together.
Know key kitchen measurements. There are many measurements that are important in creating an aesthetically pleasing and safe kitchen. Standard lower cabinets are 24 inches deep. A good rule of thumb is to keep 48 inches between parallel rows of lower cabinets to allow for safe movement even when the doors or drawers are open. However, 42 inches can work in a pinch. The smallest recommended size for a kitchen island is about 40 by 40 inches, and for counter stools, you should allow at least 12 inches of countertop overhang.

This nook is "a really great informal and comfortable way to incorporate more seating into the kitchen; seating that has a view outdoors," Horowitz says. As a bonus, it includes extra storage under the cushioned bench. השולחן מעץ נראה טוב כאן. הכסא לא מפריע
