In this Hyderabad house, Anand Gupta and his wife had initially wished for authentic classical interiors with opulent and carved detail work. However, interiors designers, Simeen and Riyaz Qureshi of Moriq Interiors & Design Consultants believed a concentrated classical look would look out of place for an apartment house since it would require a structure with more height. “We decided to execute a fused style of opulence with contemporary decor, which would save the time needed for execution, be more cost-friendly, be low on maintenance and would complement modern times better,” says Simeen.

“One can feel the richness of the interiors without categorising it in the classical style,” says Riyaz. There is a clear sense of luxury in the living room, exhibited by the use of patterned floors, high doors, multi-layered vertical treatments, drop lights, bespoke furniture and rugs. The emerald coloured walls and the multi-piece mirrors are some other design elements incorporated to bring in a touch of opulence and elegance.
The floors are of beige Italian marble that has been inlaid with custom-designed patterns in some areas. The furniture, such as the chests used as side tables and ethnic centre tables in the living room, add to the rustic look of the decor, which comes off as an interesting fusion between traditional and classical. The side lamps and drop lights in the living room, though contrasting in styles, create an eclectic balanced synergy in the house.
The duplex is an area of approximately 710 square metres connected by a sleek L-shaped metal staircase. “The views from this house (at the 29th and 30th floors) are one of the most interesting aspects about the space. We enhanced the view from the deck by keeping one half of the staircase of teak wood and wrapping the other in black Italian marble,” say the designers. Marble has been used throughout the house and brings in a good dash of grandeur.
White sliding doors in the living room were replaced by two shutters of 10 x 10 feet each that open up completely into the deck and integrate the space with the family lounge. Such modulations helped use the space in more than one way. A simple drop screen was introduced at the edge of the deck such that it would serve as a background for the parties and get-togethers hosted.
“After much struggle with the furniture and planning of the duplex, we adapted a multi-layered approach to achieve a sense of clarity in spaces,” says Simeen. The designers have arranged the family lounge in the centre of the lower level around which all the other spaces have been designed. The family room (main living room) is the central and the focal space of the home and a prime example of the fusion approach used.
To give this family room a defined space allocation, a Swarovski glass curtain is used. This curtain creates a visual screen in the space behind, which has multiple layers including a wall cladding in stone and a modern wooden jaali that is used as a sliding panel.
The mirrored Greek window introduces an element of surprise in the space. Though the entire area looks busy with a variety of elements originating from various styles superimposing on each other, they succeed in creating a cosy and composed environment.
The master bedroom, the parents’ and guest rooms are on the lower level along with the kitchen, dining area and the puja room. The space planning separated the upper and lower levels by functions. Without compromising on the structural constraints, a cut-out was made for the staircase and a few walls were rebuilt.
The upper level has a dedicated state-of-the-art home theatre system and a lounging area. A sliding door opens this space up to transform it into a lounge for the young sons to use. It also brings in the outstanding views of the city. Apart from the sons’ room, there is a study and an office area on the upper level too.
The rooms have been designed in the same fusion style as the rest of the lower floor. Lights and other elements, such as the bedroom bench, belong to a more traditional style, while the furniture is modern. Use of extended cushion seats on the sides of the bed is another example of the striking ways in which accessories and furniture have been used in this home.
The furniture and accessories selected are a combination of modern and classical styles. Lighting enhances the volume of the spaces. Hung pendants or compact chandeliers add warmth to the rooms, creating patterned shadows on treated surfaces. Curtains and upholstery have been maintained as soothers to tone down the numerous other elements of the decor.
Bathrooms are strictly modern spaces and they use glass panels, contemporary tiles, marble and modern accessories. Not many bright colours have been used here in order to maintain the neutral and elegant palette.
The designers have brought in a classical yet contemporary style through the use of drop lights, wooden chairs, partitions (lattice) and other such accessories. The result is a home that brings in an old-word charm, yet is one that has a very modern aftertaste.
